The theoretical physicist and fusion scientist was known for his award-winning research in magnetised plasma dynamics.

Dons tin-foil hat

...Okay, so what's the over/under on him having had a recent breakthrough and this being a fossil fuel industry-sponsored hit?

[-] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 26 points 3 weeks ago

Given that he was a theoretical physicist, the path from his research to anything affecting business revenue would have been long and convoluted, so unless they’re killing large numbers of physicists just in case, it’s unlikely.

Magnetohydrodynamics is a somewhat specialized subfield where there are immediate direct applications to nuclear fusion reactors.

It's basically fluid mechanics, like you'd see in the aerospace department, but the fluid both generates and is moved by the local magnetic field. Because it's an ionized plasma.

Must... Not... Make... Fallout joke

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

Or he solved theoretical physics and big physics obviously couldn't allow that to get out.

[-] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 9 points 3 weeks ago

"What do you mean 'he solved all of it'? What are we going to do with all these doctorates?!"

[-] dgdft@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

If it weren’t for fucking Gödel, we’d be there already.

Just write the standard model as a few lines of lambda calculus and leave the rest as an exercise for the reader.

Right!? I so get this. Excellent science reference! More like del is what I always say!

You know, I feel lied to from movies to believe people in these organisations are competent, and I won't deny they are effective at some things, but I'm not sure how many people in it would even comprehend that type of threat to their industry, even if there was one.

Could be wrong though, I keep my tinfoil around for shits and giggles. Ford just dropped their EVs, and Europe is pushing back their ICE manufacturing date, maybe someone knows something the rest of us don't, or maybe it's all a cluster fuck and we're all just making it up as we go along

In this case I was being tongue-in-cheek, albeit in a darkly cynical kind of way. After all, if he had made a breakthrough worth killing him over, that alone wouldn't be enough. One would have to arrange any number of inconvenient fires / break-ins to get rid of the research and data.

Mind you, if you want to sleep soundly at night, you probably shouldn't look into the stories about John Bedini's old mentor John Cejka. That shit's wild.

Oh I know it's cheeky, but I'm usually game to toss a conspiracy around the field for a bit.

And looking into Cejka is the reason why, it is indeed wild. This forum thread is some peak tinfoil hat stuff.

peak tinfoil hat stuff.

Indeed. Amusing though.

I feel like there was a Keanu Reeves movie about this.

[-] Blade9732@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I think you mean Val Kilmer. "The Saint". Bonus, Elizabeth Shue.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

No, Chain Reaction was what I was thinking of. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0115857/ Even bigger bonus Rachel Weisz.
