True. What's also true, and adds context to the clusterfuck, is that the Taliban wouldn't exist if the US didn't fund and arm extremists 50 years ago in order to prevent the spread of communism in Afghanistan.
In fact the US has a rich history of empowering extremists/authoritarians in order to prevent the spread of socialism or communism. It has never been about spreading democracy, even though their propoganda machine is very effective at convincing their citizens of that.
