Most countries are the dog sitting in the house that is on fire meme. These countries are all going "This is fine".

Fuck, this isn't fine. Political leaders need to start calling all this out yesterday.

I’m worried we’re in the time known as “the appeasement of Trump”

[-] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 5 points 4 weeks ago

We have to appease Trumpie. We have to prevent those dastardly leftists from getting any power.

I'm worried that in contrast to the UK and France in the 30s we don't have anywhere near the power to stop them even if we tried to.

All it takes is double nuke. Look at Japan

Mutually Assured Destruction doesn't really help ...

Just keep stalling, until the rotors off their carriers fall off.

Fascism is auto-cannibalistic.

How exactly are you going to stall them once they're in full conquest mode? Both Germany and Japan conquered areas multiple times as large as their own country, they were suicidally determined about it and they completely brutalized many of the areas they conquered. I don't see that suicidal determination in the US right now, but the US military can conquer a lot of countries before the US population even notices a difference.

Don't worry, Trump will help us with that.

[-] prettybunnys@piefed.social 1 points 4 weeks ago

I think we’d see a legitimate secession / civil war moment if Trump started invading countries for real without authorization from congress. The fear of that might also help a midterm move … I’m more and more afraid he’ll find a way to cancel / stop / postpone the elections

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It's much easier to just manipulate the election, even Putin does it like that. He already bragged that his people literally did that during the last presidential election - now that he's president, who is going to stop him?

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 weeks ago

Movies led me to believe that other countries' governments have elite assassins to stop people like Trump. Either they don't want to use them, or movies lied to me!

[-] nucleative@lemmy.world 7 points 4 weeks ago

Survival I guess. Sometimes the best strategy is to just outlive your enemy.

Do you want to know how many Trojan horses (aka military based) the US has planted in Europe since the end of WWII?

[-] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 1 points 3 weeks ago

I thought it was around 10 or so, turns out 38 bases according to Newsweek. Belguim and the UK would be next.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

That would be an extremely bad idea considering that the UK's nuclear weapons arsenal is not land-based. The US actually ordered those troops to do anything within 15 minutes missiles could be headed to the US. Although the smarter option would be to have the subs manoeuvre to just off the US coast and then launch. Very little time to respond then.

I'm not saying that would definitely be the response but it's a hell of a risk for the US to take. I would hope that someone in the US military has enough brains to countermand that order.
