We need some new (a couple) of general-use instances to help direct this traffic! Piefed.social will help you and redirect traffic to you.

PieFed.co.za is hosted in Germany

It's kinda geared towards South Africans, but it'll be a place where anyone is welcome. I still need to do some housekeeping though.

[-] cabbage@piefed.social 18 points 3 days ago

I really love that you're building a South African instance!

As much as the influx of Europeans to the fediverse is lovely to see, the European/North American bias here is really striking. That's of course not a problem of too many Europeans, but rather not enough other people.

[-] biltong@piefed.co.za 10 points 3 days ago

Thanks, it's quite fun to setup and run an instance and helping the community grow. Hopefully I can get a bunch of South African and Africans to join my instance.

But anyone is welcome.

No, I need to figure that out. You're welcome to be one.

[-] Blaze@piefed.zip 5 points 3 days ago

Thank you for the offer, but I don't have the sysadmin skills, and I already have a bit too much on my plate as you can guess ๐Ÿ˜…

[-] biltong@piefed.co.za 4 points 3 days ago

Cool Cool, I thought you might already have a lot on your plate

[-] SirHaxalot@nord.pub 18 points 3 days ago

I'm working on getting https://nord.pub online!(rebrand from experimental nord.red) Well, it is online but I wanted proper HA, Backups, and some curated Topics.

Hosted in the Nordics and committed to not being dependent on US tech. (using Hetzner Finland and BunnyCDN)

[-] rimu@piefed.social 8 points 3 days ago

Awesome. When you're ready, go to https://nord.pub/admin/instance_chooser and fill in the form.

[-] Skavau@piefed.social 7 points 3 days ago

You're going for a general use instance?

[-] SirHaxalot@nord.pub 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah, general use with somewhat if a focus on the Nordics "market", but I'm not planning on launching competing communities against anything existing.

[-] Skavau@piefed.social 1 points 16 hours ago

Btw can I suggest joining the Zulip or the Piefed matrix chats.

[-] SirHaxalot@nord.pub 2 points 16 hours ago

I've been lurking on the Zulip for a while but you're right it's about time I sign up!

[-] Skavau@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago

Sure, but I'm more thinking about increasing server spread across Piefed rather than specific communities as such.

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 points 3 days ago

Signed up! I still might stick to this account mainly, but a Nordic oriented Piefed instance is definitely appealing.

[-] Blaze@piefed.zip 3 points 3 days ago

That would be great!

Yep we already have a bunch of good instances ready to go:

...and ~60 more which seem to be for personal or closed-group use but which could open their doors any time - https://piefed.fediverse.observer/list

[-] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago

i love living in lgb~~t~~q~~i~~a country

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 3 points 3 days ago

And a million more on the way!

The instance chooser thing is a great addition to PF to help get users distributed across instances.

If by "direct traffic" you mean to send them there, then I'd say we don't need that, and shouldn't want it. The whole reason federation works is because control is spread out. Giving one, or a few, instances control of most of the content and users is a horrible idea and begging for issues. Speaking of, if you're on lemmy.world, you should consider spreading elsewhere. At least don't send new people there.

[-] Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com 1 points 2 days ago

A small instance isn't going to grow past PieFed.social in 1 day, let alone an actually big instance like Lemmy.world. If an instance grows too big then we just stop suggesting it and pick a new instance to suggest.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

People still direct people to Lemmy.world. A lot of people don't understand the benefits of federation still and want everyone on one instance. They won't stop when an instance gets too large.

[-] Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com 1 points 2 days ago

Well yeah but those aren't the people reading this thread

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

I don't know. I wouldn't be so sure. It's a good idea to spread the message anywhere.
