But Doylist explanations aren't necessarily paratext. "Akira Toriyama forgot that character existed" isn't paratext, it's just a fact that exists outside of the fictional universe that explains things within the fictional universe.
in addition to what keld said, diegetic things are in the text and watsonian explanations can come from paratext, especially when they're word of god in response to fan questions.
the informal distinction is referring to holms and watson, because some of the sherlock stories are presented as watson's journals.
