What is a Tankie?

Basic Rules:

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users, as it handwaves their extremism.
Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in arguments that lack mutual agreement.
Brigading/Trolling — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from maliciously voting, commenting, or manipulating the post in any way. This includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be banned. Good-faith and honest communication is an exception.
Tankies can explain their views, but may be criticised or challenged for them. Any minor infraction of the rules may result in a warning and possibly a temporary ban.

There should be a fuckton of awakening and uniting of the workers of the world, but instead, a fuckton of energy is spent on ensuring that Stalin is seen as a really neat guy, and that opposing Putin's antics makes you a racist.
I really don't understand these types. Had an encounter recently on Facebook where a self proclaimed Marxist-Leninist, instead of debating the economic form of communism, which was the topic, decided to try and convince me that 1, the USSR wasn't authoritarian 2, the Warsaw Pact countries "weren't part of the USSR" (never mind that they were all under direct control of Moscow) 3, the Hungarian revolution of 1956 was a "fascist counter revolution" and that they all supported fascism...
like, what's even your point? all you do is defend an already proven terminal, authoritarian, imperialist dictatorship, purporting that it's socialist/communist even today... why?
It mostly comes from US bad, therefore everybody fighting the US has to be good. The other part is that especially in the US the conservatives called everything left of the socialism. When a policy you want like public health care is socialist and the USSR was socialist, then logically they are the good guys. The USSR also ran a good bit of propaganda to pretend they are a worker paradise.
In developing countries you used to have another actually more reasonable approach to it. The USSR succeeded in actually competing with the West for a long time, broke the social order of the Russian Empire and managed to industrialize and even go to space. This was something a lot of Western colonies and countries in similar situations wanted to emulate. So they copied it. This is why countries like Vietnam are in many cases pretty nationalist besides officially being Communists.
