With all due respect to Dianne Feinstein, her death is absolutely going to kickstart discussions about Biden's age into a higher gear.

(Of course, the same people who say they won't vote for Biden because he's too old conveniently ignore the fact that Trump is only a couple of years behind and in much worse health.)

[-] jhymesba@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Yep. I think we need to start reminding people that Biden hasn't deteriorated in his old age. He's ALWAYS been a gaffe-machine, ALWAY a rambler, and ALWAYS a stutterer. Since he was a kid. Biden is old aged, but to me, he's not old yet. Mind you, I AM worried about him making the next 4 years, like I was worried about him making the last 4 years. Being POTUS is hard, with the weight of the world on his shoulders. But he's done a pretty damn good job, all told, given the headwinds he's faced and the international struggles we're going through. If there was an alternative I could vote for in the Primary, I would, but right now, the Primary is between Biden, a 69 year old conspiracy theorist nutter who is only BARELY better than a MAGAt, a 71 year old woman I've not heard anything from, and a convicted felon. The lady might have a shot in the Primary from me, but short of a challenge, I might just vote in the Republican primary to pick a less crazy candidate since Colorado lets me do that, and then in the General, a vote for Biden over any distractions put up by the Libertarians, Greens, and other parties.

If there was an alternative I could vote for in the Primary, I would, but right now, the Primary is between Biden, a 69 year old conspiracy theorist nutter who is only BARELY better than a MAGAt, a 71 year old woman I’ve not heard anything from, and a convicted felon.

This is one of the things I don't understand from people. Yes, Biden's old. Yes, he's not perfect. I get all that. And if there were anyone coming up the pike that looks like they're going to be the next Obama or something, I'd be a lot more receptive to this argument.

But if not Biden, who?

  • There are no Democrats coming up the pike who stand out as being the next leader of the Democratic party and have a realistic chance of being able to take down Trump. Barring Biden's death or some kind of health issue, Biden is going to be the nominee for 2024.
  • No independent party has anywhere near the national support needed to make a viable bid for the white house. A vote for an independent is essentially a vote for Trump, or at least a vote to not stand in Trump's way as others vote for him.
  • Opting to sit out the vote in protest instead because you don't like any of the candidates? See above. You just essentially voted for Trump.
  • What else are they going to do? The only other option would be to vote for a Republican.

People need to understand it. They don't have to like it, but they do have to accept it. The 2024 election is going to be Biden vs. MAGA. Period. Choose wisely. And in the immortal words of Rush, "if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.". And by sitting home, you chose Trump. Unless you want to be a part of the Trump Revenge Tour 2025, your only other option is to go to the polls and vote for Biden, even if you have to hold your nose while doing it.

Do you work for msnbc or cnn? Or is it npr?

Frankly I just need him to last long enough to get back into the white house, after that I don't care who takes over as long as it ain't another 4 years of the fascist party getting to fill SCOTUS seats.

Raz on Kamala all ya want, she still ain't Trump or DeSantis, and frankly that's all I can afford to care about right now.

To be fair, Biden is 10 years "younger" than Feinstein.

[-] Nightwingdragon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

True. But also to be fair, my grandmother is 95 years old is more mentally and physically active than most people I know decades younger than her. Aging affects everybody differently. But I wouldn't want her running for President either. I can understand the skittishness of people being weary of having the most important position in the world being filled by someone who could reasonably be expected to simply die of natural causes on any given day.

Especially in this political climate. Can you imagine the GOP's response to Biden dying in office right now and Harris becoming President of the US? Given that Harris is about as popular as bread mold, they'd be popping the champagne bottles; either Harris would just be stepped on easily by Trump because of how deeply unpopular she is even among Democrats, or the GOP would cruise to victory as the Democrats step all over each other trying to fill the void.

I'll admit, I'm in the group that would rather have a younger, viable candidate for 2024. But if it's going to be Biden or bust, my vote is with Biden 101% of the time.
