He violently resisted the insertion of a feeding tube to introduce the emetic ipecacuanha, whereupon he was restrained. John was then "force-fed the drug through a tube in his nose."[4][5] "An emergency anesthesiologist was not called to assist."[3] He then "fell to the floor,"[3] "facial color had changed, breathing and pulse had stopped."[3] The physician initially assumed he was faking. When a medical student noticed the missing pulse, emergency responders were called. After thirteen minutes, two emergency medical teams arrived and resuscitated John.[6][7] John died after a three-day coma on December 12, 2001
