World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

I get the sentiment, but why not stand up and fight? Why not make this about saving the planet, because it really is.
I do what i can, i am a student, i walk wherever i can, i try to tell my friends and family about better alternatives, what else do you suppose i do? The amount of people supporting authoritarian leaders is insane, its not 40 or 50%, its closer to 90% how can i stand up to them?, it doesn’t matter what kind of government system you have, rich people can and will suppress any opinion against them, and the government will support it
Not to mention that these people feed these things to their children from a very young age, they still don’t know how to to do basic multiplication accurately but do know which people they want to be leaders and know how to discriminate people based on their beliefs and even their ethnicity. Changing their opinion is like changing a fact for them
History loves to repeat itself, this cycle of authoritarian and democratic regime(s) has been one of them, and i am afraid we are at the former part of the cycle. I am doing whatever i can to prevent this, but in the back of my mind, i know that my words or feelings are unlikely to cause a significant change
Edit: wanted to clarify that the numbers are anecdotal and it might vary for you or from a survey, but you cant deny that they are a massive chunk
I just want to say good on you for doing your part. And I also want to say that I don’t think the majority support extremes, I think it’s just that the extremists are SO much louder and so it’s all we hear. I think the majority are like you and me and just want someone reasonable to lead the country. Just keep voting, I know it feels like it doesn’t do anything but it’s our main way to really speak and it does matter.
Side bar, if you’re a student it most likely means that you’re a lot younger than me and it makes me so sad that this is how you’ve had to see and live the world. No pressure but if you are younger the future is truly in your hands.
Who are you meeting? That's not typical.
Like i said it’s anecdotal…
The best time was perhaps 30 years ago. The second best time is now.
Brakes?
Oh I know, I was saying we aren't even tapping the brakes lol, the foot is still very much on the accelerator.
I'd be all for an uprising, if only it was as uncomplicated and low risk as video games and movies have demonstrated.
Why not stand up and fight?
You know, instead of preaching these infantile ideals in how to really make change. I'm more ready for individuals who actually have a more thought-out plan in how to achieve what we need to do.
And so far, yet, I've not seen anyone really do it and I'd be including myself before anyone makes that jab later. It's just very tiring to see people rush to social media and think that their posts will be heard or read that'll make some significant impact. When, there's absolutely no organizational structure in place or any motives in how to go about the things we all keep daydreaming of happening.
Guess it's too easy to daydream than get off of our asses and make the sacrifices required to make change. Not if we have to miss another minute of being online in a boring dystopia that is what the internet has become to all piss our time away looking at memes and making memes.
