I think a kbin app that has an “Open in kbin” option or a browser extension that adds the function into a desktop browser would be the easiest way to handle that, but I’m not sure anything exists yet.
I was thinking about "Open in kbin" earlier on phones. I don't know how iOS works, but with Android you'd need to configure the app to be the "opener" for every federated domain which isn't practical. If there was like a single site which people used as a URL handler then you could use that, but that would require everyone link through that site which, aside from the security and privacy concerns, diminishes federation in general.
Instead, a button in the app that could be like "Open
thing
" and you give it a URL is practical and, according to the reading I've been doing on the ActivityPub protocol this morning, practical. I'm thinking of maybe trying my hand at submitting a PR with the feature.A browser extension is more practical on desktop.
on iOS you can register a safari extension for it
Does it only work against certain sites and can that list be updated externally? If no to either, then it's roughly in the same boat as Android. That's the benefit of the browser extension on desktop, at least there the list can be crowdsourced and have other people constantly validating it, etc.
Normally you do this via search. So the way I'm responding to this is selecting "copy the url to the fediverse" under more and searching for the url on my instance,

. You can see people doing similar here https://lemm.ee/post/1262626 So that seems to work for lemmy/tilvids. Hmm, but that doesn't seem to work for kbin, I seem to get a 500. It's possible the integration isn't quite there yet.Edit: whoops I responded to a comment deep into this thread, well it's all I could load I guess since I'm getting 500s atm trying to load the mag/this thread
Yeah wonder if @ernest will take a PR with an "Open federated link"
@blake There are a few, I made a post about them recently: https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/129825 It is non-exhaustive and probably out of date by now. IIRC "Lemmy Home Instance Helper" now supports kbin
