am i to understand that sleep cleans that stuff out of the brain ? or was that a different headline I am conflating ?

This is an oversimplification of processes that happen during sleep. This has to do with fat metabolism in brain cells mediated through the effect of specific gene variants.

You're probably thinking of amyloid plaques, which were different and are now somewhat suspect as an explanation.
