Aren't those just there to legitimize existing sexually active relationships?
No. They're literal marriages between grown men and young girls.
Children traded to some dude in their parent's church. Sometimes the girl was never even given a birth certificate, because these Christian cults don't think their daughters are good for anything except producing more children.
