I think it's the other way round, when the amount of interesting SW is rising,the probability of good HW will be higher. And yes, as we can see, the SW can be developed independent of HW.

Unmaintained code in the kernel is really bad due to possible vulnerabilities. If you want to keep it, it must be maintained.
My suggestion, ignore those desktop fights. Just use what fits best to you. Save your energy for something useful, eg contributing.
