Right now when you search for communities, it uses the number of subscribers from your home instance only. This is also how web Lemmy works, but it isn't useful and it makes communities look dead when they're not.

If you instead pull the subscriber and comment count from the community's home instance, it would be accurate.

I think the v0.19.0 backend already fixes this, so no need to duplicate that effort in the frontends

Same with user counts on the community page, on user profiles (under moderation) etc.
