For the first time since 2005, annual average meat consumption in the Netherlands fell below 75 kilograms. The 2024 figure ended at 74.4 kilograms, according to data released Wednesday.

[...]

Still, meat consumption in the Netherlands has fallen by 6 percent compared to the peak year of 2009, according to the Wageningen study. The scientists who conducted the study indicated a "slight downward trend."

[...]

“That 6 percent could simply mean the difference between profit and loss." Molenaar said he expects the trend to continue, especially since supermarkets pledged last year to sell more plant-based proteins.

As we know, most people aren't vegan and most "communists" aren't either. At times I've even felt like my vegan but apolitical/liberal/progressive friends have better insight in the intersectionality and have more compassion than all of the carnist "comrades" I work closely with every day. Can I even consider them comrades if we're so misaligned on a basic idea?

Finding people that care is hard. Befriending and keeping them around is hard. Getting people you know to care is hard. I just feel disappointed and sad. This only sounds arrogant to people that dismiss truth, so I'll say it: This is what it feels like to be correct, and it's lonely.

Not seeking advice but I'd love to hear how your life is and what you think and feel!

The assembly line, the foundation of modern capitalism, came from perfecting methods to slice up animals while—and this is the important part—preventing them from resisting. And once capitalists figured out how to turn animals into component parts (just a leg, just a throat, just a head), they realized they could do the same thing to human workers (just a hand, just an arm, just a cutting motion). Ideas of how to prevent human resistance came from first figuring out how to prevent animal resistance.

what's y'alls stance on found, discarded animal-based food?

I'm dumpster diving for the past couple of months. combined with cruising the farmer markets around closing time, I usually score enough food that I have trouble carrying it home. seasonal vegetables and fruit mostly. I know a couple of spots where supermarkets throw away whole loafs of "expired" bread. in the freezer overnight, 7 minutes in the oven at dinner time - perfectly edible.

I've stopped eating meat like five years ago and I abandoned dairy and eggs a year ago. feel fine, lost weight; skin, hair and nails ain't the same but I'll live with it.

occasionally though I come across thrown away, intact meat and/or dairy stuff. like today, almost 5 Kg of some deli meat shit, I imagine it's pink slime inside, haven't opened it. it's past its best use date which don't bother me none. I'm not drawn to it, don't miss the taste or whatever, I'm just bothered by the waste of it.

so I'm not saying I'm gonna be swayed one way or the other but curious what other people think about this. thanks.

The comments on the original thread are all people trying to justify why they eat animals and that's ok, but this Zoo is unethical.

Not really into a lot of fake meat, and some of these look like cat food, but I guess if you want to convert a recipe to vegan using tuna, here you go. I would rather use slightly mashed chickpeas seasoned with nori or other seaweed, tbh. Anyone try these?

The concept of vegan tinned fish might sound weird at first, but it’s just another emerging sector of the thriving plant-based meat industry.
