Polls:

Once the threads are finished, it is now time to discuss how the megathread should be built. I apologize in advance for having forgotten to mention any apps for daily use. I noticed that I may have failed launchers or other useful apps for daily use. Still, the threads are open. Any suggestion are welcome. I would like to ask you to contribute with upvotes or downvotes in the comments that best suit your vision. All contributions are important.

Here, you can discuss and say your apps you may have forgotten - https://lemmy.ml/post/11678824

Since English is not my native language, I will try my best to explain some details I want to discuss with the Lemmy community. If you don't understand certain things, please tell me what you don't understand, and I will do my best again.

So…… Lets begin………

  • I was thinking of opening three threads per year to update the megathread. Do you think that 3 times a year is enough (for example, once in January, once in June, and another one in December), or do you think I should open 5 to 6 times a year? | Poll here - https://strawpoll.com/XOgONY582n3

  • Tittle Im thinking: [Megathread] FOSS Apps — Lemmy Edition | You like? Or do you want another?

  • How do you prefer to divide the megathread? I'm thinking of dividing the threads into single topics, that is, intended for each type of app — for example, one part just for YouTube apps, another just for email apps, and so on. This is an example - https://i.imgur.com/pgw47oM.png | I guess it explains better what I'm talking about. How would you like to see the megathread?

  • I'm thinking of accepting only suggestions with two upvotes (or a difference with two upvotes) or above on previous threads. Do you think it's fair, or should I accept all the suggestions given? | Poll here - https://strawpoll.com/7rnzmK9oDyO

  • In the megathread, I will not accept app suggestions because, in this way, the topic will be clogged. However, I must remain open to important information and other things, as, for example, happened with Simple Mobile Tools, which was sold to a shady company. Of course, all suggestions are welcome, besides app suggestions. Your suggestions will be prompt and extremely useful when I open the threads to update the megathread.

TL;DR …. So far, I'm thinking this:

  • Open three-time-per-year threads to talk about new updates for MegaThread.
  • Divide all apps into specific categories.
  • Only accept suggestions with 2 upvotes or above.
  • Not accept suggestions on MegaThread and accept only tips and important information.

Tell me what you think. What you agree or/and disagree.

Lovely day for everyone!

How do you plan on not being oudated?

There was a post the other day saying openboard is no longer maintained. Would it sit on your list for x months until you update it?

[-] dez@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 months ago

Btw, just make it clearly, because I can make a mistake while writing the main post... About suggestions, Im refering about apps suggestions. Of course, all suggestions besides that are completely welcome.

A megathread is an outdated method to show information. Usually, you use a git or wiki site for this kind of info. Anyone can suggest updates to the page or even directly update the page itself. Having one person curating the list once every couple of months isn't really state of the art.

[-] dez@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I'm not going to create any git or wiki, because that would defeat the purpose of creating the megathread, which is based on the opinions of Lemmy members. And I guess all members dont have an account on GitHub.

The biggest job I have is now, building the megathread... it gets easier later.

Obviously all help is precious, and any help is welcome. Anyone can help me. tho, thanks for the suggestion!

Edit: however, about creating something outside from Lemmy, can be discuss next time with a poll. Next thread I will show the megathread and I can create a poll to discuss that

I wrote my advice. Thx for considering it.

This is an open source forum, meaning even lists are expected to be open, or free.

In the best case, you define criteria and others submit the content. If the only criteria is that is has to be open source (probably with a libre license, otherwise it's not really open), there will be a lot of rubbish on the list, even with some upvote criteria.

In the best case you find one or two others to create a group that takes care of the list.

E.g. openboard. It's still a good app, people still recommend it, people still use it. It's just not maintained anymore. And there's only a little security risk in this. Hence, for a curated list, such an app should not be recommended anymore, if and only if there is a viable alternative, although many people recommend it.

Thank you for the suggestion. All are welcome. I understand your point of view, and I think this should be debated, for sure.

However, imo, don't know if it will make sense to open something separately, since this was done by the lemmy members. I think it would defeat the purpose of the megathread by getting suggestions outside of lemmy.

I have no problem taking full responsibility for this. Obviously all help is welcome, but I take this on with all rigor and pleasure.

Other things I also want to discuss in the next thread are in relation to apps that not received updates again on last years. I understad there are apps that work without any problems, but I would like to know how much time need to past to become plausible to add an app to the megatrhead.

Regarding the fact that there may be apps that may seem like rubbish to you, I also understand your point of view, but I think that will depend on each person. I've just finished the megathread now, and, firstly, I added the apps that are used daily, and only then I add the rest , dividing into topics. Next week I will show the final work so everyone can give their opinion and say what you don't like

[-] dez@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

That is the type of information I will suggest to you/we can give on MegaThread. Openboard will not appear since, as you said, it is not maintained. I will remove apps that have been abandoned, of course. I will try to see all apps once per month to see if they are maintained or not. But, as I said, this type of information is really important to put on comments on MegaThread. I encourage all members to say to me these important things, as you did. It will help me and the community. (:

[-] nailoC5@lemy.lol 6 points 10 months ago

Only accept suggestions with 2 upvotes or above.

Not a good criteria. Some comments have +10 apps. So, all the apps will be included even if most people upvoted just for an app or two. Also, if someone adds a suggestion after more than 24h of the post. The comment will likely not get any upvotes because no one will see it.

[-] dez@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I understand your point of view, but dont know how to make this more "democratic". I have no problem accept all suggestions, even that are downovoted. But yeah... ty for you opinion!

Edit: And I was very annoying along the threads to people upvote or downvote posts 😅

[-] n2burns@lemmy.ca 5 points 10 months ago

I think 3 times a year would be good, but I'd prefer if it was every 4 months instead of after 5 months, then 6 months, then 1 month ;)

Thanks for all your work!

[-] dez@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago

Thanks for your comment! I may open next week another thread to discuss the final votes of the polls and to show everyone how I built the megathread, to find out if you like it or not. Or if you want some changes before opening it,.

As you suggest, you prefer something like one thread in January, one in May, one in September, and one in December? I don't mind repeating December and January, even though they are consecutive months.

[-] n2burns@lemmy.ca 3 points 10 months ago

No, your post says

Do you think that 3 times a year is enough (for example, once in January, once in June, and another one in December)

I assume this is just an error and you didn't mean consecutive months!

[-] dez@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago

Sorry mate, I probably missunderstood what you say. I will try understand. So, after December, your suggestion is open thread one time per 4 month, right? i.e. after December: open in April, then in August, then in December, and so on. Did I understand right, now? xD

[-] dez@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Btw, give me 2 weeks to finish this. I was working on it, but I need a few more days to prepare everything and put it in good shape. Until then (end of February - 27/28/29), you can continue leaving your app suggestions! - https://lemmy.ml/post/11678824

By the end of February, Megathread will be open, for sure.

[-] SomeBoyo@feddit.de 2 points 10 months ago

Will the megathread be mirrored to some other site, like the c/piracy one?

[-] scratchandgame@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 months ago

Should I install all of them :>?

[-] Substance_P@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Hello, I would like to suggest, as others have, that four times per year would be a good compromise. I attempted to access the poll link, but as a privacy advocate—likely a common trait among those discussing open source—I was unable to vote because of my VPN. Also, I just wanted to share my thoughts and express my appreciation for your efforts in taking on this project.

[-] Player2@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago

Polling sites often block VPNs and repeated IPs to prevent the same person voting more than once

[-] dez@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 months ago

Ty. And sorry about that. Dont know which I did , for you cannot vote with a VPN. Sorry :(
