During a visit to Beijing last week, Carney hailed a "new strategic partnership" with China that resulted in a "preliminary but landmark trade agreement" to reduce tariffs -- but Trump warned of serious consequences should that deal be realized.

If Carney "thinks he is going to make Canada a 'Drop Off Port' for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," he said. "If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the USA."

“Canada, if you complete a business deal that benefits you, I will raise taxes on Americans.”

What?

Let’s just isolate the U.S.A. if that’s what they want. They do deserve it.

Please do, but please ensure to not allow the Billionaires to flee to your countries. Keep them contained.

Yes, it's like saying: Either you do business with me or I shoot myself in the knee. Trading with China and others, nobody needs the USA anymore.

Trump is not a politician or a businessman. He BELONGS in prison.

[-] jack@hexbear.net 32 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

He is in fact the perfect example of both a politician and a businessman. That's why he belongs in prison.

[-] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

This is going to feel like semantics, but his corruption and sadism doesn't preclude his inclusion to politics and business, just the opposite IMO. It's more the case that criminally corrupt politicians and businessmen belong in prison, if that makes sense?

I for one, welcome the devouring of our "social fabric, and general way of life". Good riddance.

It is just "escalate to deescalate". Please do as you please Canada.

This will piss off billionaires in the US, then I believe congress need to be notified of any intention to leave NAFTA. Billionaires are the source of congressman money-motivation. The result will be internal dissention in Republican congress members… I understand the current silence of congress like : we can’t have Republican unity to vote on implementing this fascist agenda, so we help by not impeaching (while retaining the option to pivot snd do so later.)

It was going to happen anyway, better now and in a way that will keep Canada united

The billionaires are making money either way. Not only are they fine, they are entertained and betting money on these types of events.

TL;dr the cruelty is the point.

USMCA in shambles

Bluff. And caving to this bluff will mean the president will use it all the time.

Everyone already picks on canada, dictators love to pick on them every time canada stands up for human rights or something, it's fun, makes the saudis feel tough I'm sure. The US should've been jumping in on canada's side when that happened, but even with democrats our leaders are at best worthless. Because of that these guys got in there and plan on fixing elections for their party. So they will get worse every term if they are able to, and are already starting from the biggest pieces of shit the rich have on offer.

Hahaha what?

[-] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 2 months ago

The neoliberal western govenments' israeli actions were symbolic meaningless gestures first of all.

I do not see how that refutes my point either. Countries like aforementioned saudis, or turkey, love to pick on them when canada makes some moral stand. Makes the leaders look tough.

Israel and the us surely did pick on ca and the uk et for this one too but that is a different dynamic entirely.

Alright grandpa, so you're setting yourself up for another TACO humiliation.

Remember folks: this isn't a threat to the Canadian citizenry. It's a threat to the Canadian bourgeoisie, specially the extractive sector. US denizens paying higher prices also doesn't matter, this is all about pressuring the Canadian ruling class that's deeply dependent on exporting to the US in the short term. This is also why US corporations that operate in the target country usually get exemptions.
