OS: CachyOS GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Board: MPG B550 GAMING PLUS CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (16) @ 4.43 GHz Memory: 31.26 GiB

i try to keep it short: i have issues with some games (like the witcher 3) and often hear that its an issue with nvidia drivers etc..

So my question is: would a switch / small upgrade to a AMD Radeon 6800 be worth it?

Hello lemmings, I've once again come for your advice. I've built a sff system with a dual boot bazzite os. This will be mostly for my kids playing games and media serving from Big picture in the living room. I'm trying to figure out the best way to set up the accounts. Ideally it would be as close to a console experience as possible but I want to make sure each kid can save their own progress. What's my best option here? Does everyone need their own os account that signs them into steam properly? I've never set up a system for multiple users before.

Edit: details

Edit: thanks for all the feedback! I'm leaning towards single system account with multiple steam accounts. Now I just need to figure out how to keep myself signed in on steam so I don't have to put my PW in every time. Thanks a ton!

Github workflows:

  • fixup automatic building and attachment of GE-Proton release tarballs.

Proton:

  • changes imported for upstream proton
  • changes imported for upstream build environment
  • changes imported for upstream lsteamclient
  • changes imported for upstream steamvr
  • FEX now builds as part of proton as per upstream changes
  • wine-wayland/em-10 patches rebased
  • wine-staging patches rebased
  • SDL dummy controller will no longer be active when steam input is inactive (such as when wine-wayland is enabled, in which case steam input doesn't work)
  • ffxvi (16) crash with wayland enabled fixed
  • DLSS Scaling now available
  • add PROTON_DLSS_INDICATOR to enable DLSS hud
  • add PROTON_FSR4_INDICATOR to show FSR4 watermark
  • docs: Update Readme for scaling _UPGRADE variables:

fsr4 PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE Automatically download amdxcffx64.dll and upgrade games with FSR 3.1 to use FSR 4. Version to download can be specified by supplying it as a value, like so PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE="4.0.1", instead of 1. Downloads version 4.0.2 of the required DLL by default. This option also disables AMD Anti-Lag 2 currently due to various issues.

fsr4hud PROTON_FSR4_INDICATOR Enable the FSR4 watermark at the top left portion of the screen.

fsr4rdna3 PROTON_FSR4_RDNA3_UPGRADE Identical to PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE but for RDNA3 GPUs. Enables some required compatibility options and downloads version 4.0.0 of the DLL by default.

fsr3 PROTON_FSR3_UPGRADE

dlss PROTON_DLSS_UPGRADE Automatically download and use newer versions of nvngx_dlss(d|g).dll DLLs. Version to download can be specified by supplying it as a value, like so PROTON_DLSS_UPGRADE="310.2", instead of 1, to download version 310.2.1.0. This option also sets DXVK_NVAPI_DRS_SETTINGS to use the latest preset. If you provide your own config for it through this environment variable, your configuration is going to be applied..

dlsshud PROTON_DLSS_INDICATOR Enable the DLSS overlay at the bottom left portion of the screen. This is exactly the same as FSR4_WATERMARK=1

xess PROTON_XESS_UPGRADE

Posting here because I don't know any other decent communities to ask.

I'm running Mint on a fairly beefy PC that was top spec in 2022. I started with Windows then added another SSD for Linux. I went with Mint but overall I've found games to be a bit lackluster on here.

The main one is Elden Ring: Nightreign. It runs buttery smooth on Windows, but on the same PC using Linux it gets a little choppy and almost unplayable if I'm in a round with others.

I've noticed other issues like Arc Raiders is meant to work well on Linux but was an unplayable mess for me.

I'm just doing everything through Steam so nothing weird or hacky going on, I have a laptop with Bazzite I use to get games from Myabandonware running and it has been fine by comparison.

Are there any extra programs or dependencies I should download? Or should I just switch to Bazzite given I'm gaming and running a Nvidia card? I got into Linux after building this PC so I didn't know AMD was better for Linux at the time. Building this PC showed me how to install an OS on a computer so it was the start of the rabbithole for me in a way.

I know there isn't a lot of details on specs here, but I'm more wondering if there's anything more I should do on a non-gaming focused distro or if it's easier to just switch.

Got a new disk and reinstalled my system (Fedora 43). Followed my own guide how to compile Opentrack with the Neuralnet tracker plugin: https://simpit.dev/systems/opentrack/

Worked fine but needs some build dependency updates meanwhile, like qt6 instead of qt5. Still amazed how good the Neuralnet tracker with ONNX runtime is.

I want to go curved ideally. I really like the LG 45 inch models the oleds their 240hz. I can shop online or local. I think larger is better but I also cannot afford something outrageous . I won't post a budget as I'm very deal focused and can make moves to get the right purchase. I won't spend over 1000 USD and I will likely score the item half price or hunt until I get a unicorn deal.

For reference I've gamed on 60hz TV my entire life. Now I game on a 86inch tv at 120hz input lag is awful, the screen is awesome but generally it's 4k 60 turned down to 1080p 120hz. But I'm looking to up my refresh and response time to something good for battlefield 6.

I have never gamed outside of 1080p. I have no real idea other than to get an OLED and atleast 240hz prefer higher.

Any recommendations or advice? Sorry English is not my best.

New to Linux Advice (lemmy.world)

Ive not had a PC or gaming PC in 15 years. I want to get back into it now.

Im fairly against windows. I'd like to try a Linux system and thought this would be a fun way to get into Linux.

Ive been looking at some black friday sales here Newegg sales

Its been so long since ive looked at PC specs I feel like im completely new. Ive read that an AMD GPU can be easier for Linux so I started there.

So Ive got two questions!

What are some must have specs in you opinion to run most modern games, and would you have a #1 recommend for a prebuilt to get started with?

What disto is best for a total newbie who wants to use it for gaming and eventually transition for anything/everything else?

I recently bought Diablo 1 via GoG and wanted to install it on my Dell Latitude for couch sessions. I installed it via Heroic and everything seemed fine, but after the Blizzard splash, the game stays black. Sometimes, when I tab out, some menu texts appear in the tab switcher thumbnail, but thats about it. I fumbled around with the graphics settings in the pre-game settings window (which is really tiny) and tries window mode, different resolutions etc. but nothing changed.

It feels a bit like a "not good enough graphics card" but... well, its Diablo 1...

Is there something I can do, or try, to make D1 playable?

Following on from the success of the Steam Deck, Valve is creating its very own ecosystem of products. The Steam Frame, Steam Machine, and Steam Controller are all set to launch in the new year. We've tried each of them and here's what you need to know about each one.

"From the Frame to the Controller to the Machine, we're a fairly small industrial design team here, and we really made sure it felt like a family of devices, even to the slightest detail," Clement Gallois, a designer at Valve, tells me during a recent visit to Valve HQ. "How it feels, the buttons, how they react… everything belongs and works together kind of seamlessly."

For more detail, make sure to check out our in-depth stories linked below:

Steam Machine: Compact living room gaming box

Steam Controller: A controller to replace your mouse

So uh, ahem.

Yes.

Valve can indeed count to three.

Lutris fails to download assets sometimes, leaving you with blank covers. Cover Up aims to work around a majority of the problem by downloading missing artworks from SteamGridDB.

I know, stupid AF that I can’t get it to work. For the life of me, I’m not able to play the game on the pc. Of course I can just play in the browser, but I wanted to install it on my Linux machine and fire it up whenever I wanted to. I haven’t tried for a while, but I remember trying a couple of months earlier and there was an app that installed and launched but my controller wouldn’t work with it. I know about super tux, but I wanted Mario. There is only snapcraft app to install called mari0, but I don’t use snaps. Could someone please help me get it installed without going through the whole retro arch thing? Thank you

Hello. I was thinking about installing and running FFXIV Online on my Linux machine. Is this possible? And if so, how?

I know you can install Steam's version, but I would ideally like to use their client so I can access my characters.

I've been hearing some good things about WinBoat, so I am wondering if anyone has tried to use it with game mod loaders. Like the windows version of Satisfactory Mod Manager (I know there is a linux one that works perfectly and exactly like the windows version but as this is a very popular game maybe someone did it this route) or, the one I am really interested in right now, Raft Mod Loader. Raft Mod Loader page suggests 1. Bottles and less recommended 2. straight wine. I would like to use a single solution for most of my windows carry overs, ie; steam is one stop for ~90% of my games flat and VR, lutris is one stop for 2 non steam games atm, but I am uncovering more as I go.

I also have 2 windows only apps for VR - FPSVR and Desktop+(this is free), obviously they will not want to port their apps to linux for such a small user base. Has anyone tried these in WinBoat?

EDIT: So, yeah. For my needs this is a 20lb sledge hammer putting in a finishing nail
