If you ask investors, Reddit is doing great. Its current market cap sits at nearly $22 billion, three times what it debuted at during its March 2024 IPO. Once a little-known successor to Fark and Digg, and a great place to engage in down-to-earth communication and meet interesting people, it's now one of the most well-known social (or anti-social) media platforms in the world.

From a user perspective, though, the site is less friendly than ever. The latest change — made with zero fanfare, as usual — now allows complete strangers to reduce your account's functionality for any reason they see fit. Now, if someone blocks you, you're no longer able to edit, delete, or even view your own comments, with exactly zero recourse for you, the person who originally posted them.

Reddit's block function has prevented users from further participating in comment chains for quite some time, which already opened up the potential for abusing control over certain discussions. The latest update to blocking not only stops a user's ability to comment further, it makes it look like they never commented at all — but only to the blocked user. Others can still see and reply to the original comment, despite its invisibility to the apparent owner.

While Reddit never announced the change, it's seemingly been in place for some users — but not all — for varying lengths of time. Mentions of the change can be found as far back as June 2024, but got little widespread attention. Now, according to Android Police's and others' experience, the update appears to be rolling out even more widely.

This was my battle last night. Trying to post how much a 3k deductible cost between my employer and I.

• 10k annual premium for me.
• 13k for my employers contribution.
• 3k Deductibles are seperate so 6k for family
• Max out of pocket 10k.

I have since switched to a "higher" deductible plan with HSA. Still rediculous

Lemmy was a great idea. It put reddit into the users hands. Its fast, works well and gave the community control of its community

In the past we had the ability, and ive done this before. To mass edit my reddit comments so they no longer can use my data for profit. As of earlier this month, reddit has removed the ability to do this if youve been banned

Sorry for the long title. Some context to this: Readium LCP is a DRM-solution created and delivered by the non-profit foundation EDRLab (I guess we've learned by now that non-profit doesn't equal good), based in France.

EDRLab is an international, non-profit development laboratory working on the deployment of an open, interoperable and accessible digital publishing ecosystem worldwide.

In recent years they've gained a large market share in the EU first and foremost, providing both regular e-book shops in many EU countries and libraries with this DRM (if you're interested in some more technical information regarding this DRM solution, I'd recommend reading Terence's previous blog post). What's particular to this solution is that they've historically been very litigious about any attempts to DeDRM it. The most famous plugin for DeDRMing books in Calibre (mainly Adobe DRM) has been the NoDRM plugin, and they did release a DeDRM solution to LCP v1.0 but they were threatened with legal action with a DMCA takedown request (read more on Github).

In recent days, Terence Eden posted a fully legal solution on his blog on how to bypass their DRM. This was also posted to the /r/Calibre subreddit, see the following image: I also made a thread on Lemmy here.

Nonetheless, after around a day the thread was removed on the Calibre subreddit. The only rule I could find that maybe could be applied to this (if it was illegal, and if Terence did this with any other material that wasn't his own) is the rule against piracy. But it feels weird.

This subreddit has previously allowed, and still allow, discussions around the NoDRM plugin and how to DeDRM the Adobe DRM. What makes this fully legal solution of bypassing LCP any different? It can probably be deduced that the EDRLab foundation contacted the subreddits moderators, or reddit admins, and "threatened" them in order to have it taken down. Or guilt tripped them as they also did towards Terence. Aside from their previous DMCA takedown request to the NoDRM people, just look at their arrogant correspondence towards Terence (more in his blog post). Threatening him on no legal basis as well as somehow blaming their failure on developing accessibility tools to him posting about this solution:

"We were planning to now focus on new accessibility features on our open-source Thorium Reader, better access to annotations for blind users and an advanced reading mode for dyslexic people. Too bad; disturbances around LCP will force us to focus on a new round of security measures, ensuring the technology stays useful for ebook lending (stop reading after some time) and as a protection against oversharing."

These are some of the reasons why I think a federated web will be necessary moving forth. I really dislike DRM, but also these methods that DRM organizations use in order to control the conversation. Thanks for reading and engaging with my small fixation on DRM and especially LCP :)

Hello, Lemmy community. I left Reddit for good once r/pics decided to permanently ban me because I posted to a Trump subreddit. I am not a Trump supporter, nor should that matter.

What got me banned was a post I made, which linked to a Forbes article criticizing the latest tax break attempting to get passed. It will allow a tax break to everyone who makes $150K or less. But where has that money been going? Social Security and Medicaid. Essentially, the governing administration knows that gutting these programs is unpopular, so they'll drain them of funding and call it a bonus. That's like saving funding for a hospital by cutting the electricity.

I posted a quote and a link from the article, was predictably downvoted for it, and I was done with it. Days later, the ban happened.

When I tried to contest the ban, I was muted for 28 days. For my innocuous comments in one subreddit, I was permanently banned from another.

This all happened today. Since the muting, I deleted my Reddit account and will not be going back.

It's not the same over here... I miss reddit. People on Lemmy are defeatet and/or want to go full world war 3, instead of uniting to prevent it. How many people on here are bots?... How many on here are spies... I miss reddit. There were bad people over there too... But the majority were good. The majority were logical and united. I miss reddit. I think I don't like Lemmy.

Hey redfugees! I'm a little OOTL... I know reddit has been going downhill for a while, but how has it suddenly nosedived? What triggered it? It's bewildering, and they're losing countless users.

A mod from r/popculture was raising alarms about posts regarding Luigi Mangione getting people banned. Apparently, the mod in question was reinstating posts calling for violence and other reasons against TOS, posts which admins had removed, leading to them getting suspended. This isn't to say that reddit admins are without fault or definitely not targeting discussions about Luigi, though I just thought it was funny that this particular person was lying for no reason and got caught.
