Why the fuck would they do that

[-] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

not everyone in the NBA is smart.

[-] collapse_already@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

What a weird way to find out Luka has a drug addiction. (That's the only way this make sense. )

[-] vodkasolution@feddit.it 3 points 2 weeks ago

Klay, probably one of the most impacted players or one of the few that, understanding the robbery, spoke: Luka to LA is like Bron to Miami

[-] David_Eight@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I was watching ESPN today (first time in a long time) and they were legit acting like this might be a good thing for Dallas, how Luka is kinda fat, and it could improve their chances blah blah blah. I just felt like I was being gaslight by an entire sports network, like wtf are they talking about LMAO.

Dallas got robbed and Pelinka might be a sith lord with the mind tricks he pulled on Nico. There is no fucking way the Mavs get to the finals this year or any time in the near future, 0.

[-] Jackcooper@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Here to join the chorus that the Mavs are idiots

[-] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago

No idea why the Mavs do this, was Luka unhappy?

[-] Death__BySnuSnu@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

This had to have been fixed by the league. There's absolutely NOTHING in this for the Mavs. Horrible, horrible trade!

[-] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 weeks ago

Like the nets got 5 firsts for bridges, the jazz got 5 for Gobert, how is this the best you got for Luka? NO ONE KNEW HE WAS EVEN AVAILABLE

Everything I’m seeing right now is saying he didn’t ask out either, I’m not even a Mavs fan and it feels like a gut punch lol

[-] imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

I feel so bad for you, my condolences.

That's exactly what I was thinking as a Knicks fan, like we gave 5 firsts for Mikal and it only takes ONE for fucking Doncic??? He's a 25 year old walking triple double, perennial MVP candidate.

And of course it had to be the Lakers who get another franchise player for the next decade basically for free. Fuck sake.

[-] Death__BySnuSnu@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

This feels like a league trade for ratings. How else can you explain it? This is such an incredibly lopsided trade. With the league ratings having been down for so long, they had to do something to get their prime markets back. Next up, Giannis to the Knicks for the NY pizza rat and a carton of milk from the nearest bodega.

[-] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

don't forget "the league" is the owners, why would the other 28 owners be okay with fixing such a closed transaction with no chance at Luka themselves? it's not fixed, sometimes people just do dumb shit.

[-] David_Eight@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

I mean, there is no other possible explanation right? I'm a life long Lakers fan and this makes no sense.

[-] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

They didn't get much back either.

[-] David_Eight@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

I think if they were the same age you could argue defense blah blah blah. But they're not lol.

Christie and what will probably be a late first round pick? Like you guys don't want nothing else? Is this a prank lol? Ok

[-] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 0 points 3 weeks ago

But he's a free agent after next season. If they wait until next season to trade him on an expiring, they will get nothing back like Raptors got nothing for Siakam.

[-] David_Eight@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

No dude, just no.

Luca is a 25y perennial MVP candidate and hasn't even peaked probably. I'm pretty sure every team in the league would be in a bidding war if they knew he was available, even next year.

[-] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 0 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

See my comment below. There must be a good reason Mavs would've done this. They knew something. Like Luka was going to sign with Lakers. Lakers had clear their cap space to give Luka a max in 2026. That is the ONLY logic to this move - they are doing this NOW to get something back instead of losing him for nothing, or getting nothing for an expiring Luka because everyone knows Luka isn't signing with anyone but Lakers. THAT is the ONLY rational thing that makes sense out of this. If Luka was happily going to go where they want to trade him, the market for him would be huge. But if Luka comes out and says I ain't signing with anyone but Lakers, market's dead, gone, caput done.

many Mavs fans at reddit are saying that new ownership wanted to sabotage the team, making it easier then to relocate the team to Vegas.

[-] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

they are going to make a new team in Vegas, the league isn't abandoning the 9th biggest city in the country. That's just silly.

Maybe ownership had financial concerns, but it has nothing to do with relocation.

[-] rishado@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Not just that, but the Adelsons lobby HEAVILY to legalize casino gambling in Texas. Even more, they don't even own casinos in Vegas anymore... only Macau.

[-] knightmare@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

AM I TAKING CRAZY PILLS??

[-] scytale@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

The only reason that would make sense to me is that Luka is such a diva or an asshole behind the scenes that the organization wanted to get rid of him asap. But it still doesn’t make any sense to let him go for AD and 1 FRP when most of the contending teams would gladly give so much more for him.

[-] TAG@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Kyrie was a known asshole and diva, and the Mavs had no problem trading for him. The only way this makes sense is if tomorrow we find out Luka was point shaving.

[-] scytale@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

The NBA should win an emmy for best drama lmao. That joke about it being a soap opera for men really is true.

[-] Lootboblin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

more drama than in WWE

[-] rezz@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Officially the biggest post in /c/NBA history — thanks Nico!

[-] David_Eight@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

This dude just bought a 15 million dollar house, just closed it last week in Dallas. Apparently he cried when he found out. - Chandler Parsons

And they cost him over 100m from loosing the supermax. Now the Mavs are spreading rumors how Luka is fat and difficult to deal with in the media.

Luka got traded out of sheer pettiness, Mavs are just a trash organization now SMH

[-] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

The Mavs as an org may never recover from this. What star wants to play for a team that does this to the player that took them to the finals.

[-] Lootboblin@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Are the Lakers now allowed to play with 2 balls? both for James and Luka.

[-] imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

Worst trade in professional sports since Babe Ruth went to the Yankees 🤯

[-] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago

It really is lol like the justification is that Luka has conditioning issues and is injured so instead of going to any other team they just go to the lakers and trade for an older more injury prone AD and 1 pick lol

[-] Lootboblin@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

It feels like the Mavs didn’t even explore the market. If you trade away 25 year old generational talent (even little bit overweight) the return should be more than that. Weird af trade.

[-] SamuelRJankis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

On a day where Trump seems to have caused trillion dollars worth of damage Nico seemed to have one upped him. Bravo

  • Shams Charania: The Mavericks approached the Lakers recently and offered Luka Doncic, sources tell ESPN. Lakers brass met and believed the 25-year-old Doncic has the ability to be the face of their franchise for the next decade while giving Anthony Davis a win-now move in Dallas.https://xcancel.com/ShamsCharania/status/1885925196650963331

  • Bobby Marks: There are major financial implications for Luka Doncic with this trade. He was in line to receive a five-year $345M contract this summer. Doncic is no longer super max eligible.https://xcancel.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1885922284071702954

  • Tim McMahon: "I believe that defense wins championships,” Mavs GM Nico Harrison told ESPN regarding his motivation to trade Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future."https://xcancel.com/espn_macmahon/status/1885922718333181992

  • Tim McMahon: The Mavs had major concerns about moving forward with Luka Doncic due to his constant conditioning issues and the looming commitment of another supermax contract extension this summer, sources told ESPN.https://xcancel.com/espn_macmahon/status/1885924010669621271

Are you telling me that the Lakers are getting Luka on a discounted salary on top of getting him in the first place? It's that what this means?

[-] Mars2k21@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Surprised the NBA didn't veto this one like they did with CP3 and the Lakers

[-] vodkasolution@feddit.it 1 points 2 weeks ago

I think we'll never see a veto again

[-] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 0 points 3 weeks ago

lol the fat fuck is going to LA like all the conspiracy theorists said!!! OMG

[-] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 weeks ago

Like even if he wanted out and would only resign with the Lakers how do you not get a better return?

[-] TAG@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Some team would still trade good pieces for him in hope of hanging up a banner and convincing him to stay. The Raptors tried to give Kawhi Stockholm Syndrome.

[-] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 0 points 3 weeks ago

So here's Mavs' thinking. Luka has player option for 2026. Lakers have cleared cap space to give Luka the MAX. Mavs must have a sniffling of an idea that Luka wasn't going to sign with them. So they are getting the best deal they can NOW. It also explains the leaks tonight on Mavs' frustrations with Luka's "conditioning" basically calling him a lazy fat fuck in polite words.

[-] yeehawboy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Two years of luka basketball with the mavs absolutely outweighs this trade. One year of luka basketball (the rest of this season) absolutely outweighs this trade. The mavs, being upset about his conditioning could have literally shopped around the league for more than this crap. This is a complete and utter failure on behalf of the mavs and in my opinion a sell out from the new owners who don’t care about the future of this franchise and don’t want to pay luka his super max contract he very much deserves. I am a Mavs fan so all of this is extremely raw, but it’s so hard for me to see this as any other way than how I see it right now
