The use of content warnings on !asklemmy

TL;DR

Use spoilers for NSFW content that is "within reason" and doesn't break Rule 1 like this :

My NSFW warning

My NSFW comment or post content

This will look like (click the triangle) :

::: spoiler My NSFW warning

My NSFW comment or post content

:::

The longer version

The community rules which seem to need to be balanced by the mods most are:

  1. Be nice & have fun, and
  2. NSFW is okay, within reason.

The lemmy.world site rules also state:

We are not a free speech zone. This CoC lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. You cannot say or post anything that violates these rules or principles and remain a member of our community. You must follow this CoC. If you are looking for something else, please do. It is not here.

The Moderators are not morality or thought police. Moderators are guided by this Code of Conduct. Post what you want, if what you post follows these rules, principles and the goals outlined above. Not every member of the community will appreciate controversial or explicit posts so use Content Warnings very liberally. We use Content Warnings so community members themselves can decide whether they want to see or engage with a post that may be controversial or explicit.

Bullies, trolls and disruptors are not welcome. We will moderate accordingly.

This is a voluntary community. You chose to be here. When you choose to join, you have implied that you agree with this Code of Conduct and will follow it.

Moderators seek to apply these, sometimes conflicting, rules. In doing so we take the balance of probabilities approach. The majority of comments which have been removed to date have been a clear breach of community Rule 1, however sometimes balancing the requirement to be accepting of NSFW content and the requirement for participants to be nice can be difficult. To make this easier, posters and commentors are encouraged to use the spoiler functionality in markdown to create a content warning on asklemmy. Posts that use a spoiler are less likely to be removed when considering whether they are "within reason" NSFW.

To create a spoiler, use three colons ":" followed by the word "spoiler" and then the warning text to create a content warning. Type your comment(s) on the lines below and then three colons at the end to end the spoiler.

People who make me feel like crap or worse off then when I encountered them consistently are written off and out of my life

Doesn't matter if its family, nobody is entitled to your attention and suffering and it does nobody any real good for you to succumb to the inevitable dysfunction it creates in your life and relationships and also material conditions.

I am toying with a new PC build and wanted to check how good new CPUs are compated to a bit older ones, and yeah cpu.userbenchmark have never been that good but usually you could get an idea by comparison.

Now it's neanderthal name calling and blunt intel promotion, what's happening??

Mine is Ludo: A solid 2 to 4 Player board game.

Fun Fact: It causes a war in Hindu Mythology.

Second is Chess because dev abandoned their game.

I want to buy a large new tv mostly for my steamdeck. I dont want it to access the internet for obvious reasons. I live in a community with wide open wifi everywhere that requires no password, so devices turned on here just hook up automatically. Im not tech savvy so wont be doing any raspberry pi black magic. Any suggestions about specific televisions or workarounds in this situation would be greatly appreciated.

It seems like a sort of idée fixe that means something, just like that twinkly bit that plays in the sad introspective theme.

Sort of like a black starry sky reflecting off an ocean of sadness. I dunno haha, it seems like it signifies something

I'm practicing for my driving licence and I'm going to driving school, just out of curiosity though I've looking on YouTube how to start and run a car and I've seen at least 3 different methods, I dunno which one is the correct. Things like the order when you release a pedal or when you need to press the clutch keep switching...

I've cleaned/sanitized and let it dry and everything. The audio seems fine and I'm playing that audio track that dislodges the water with sound.

Anything else I should do? Rice etc?

I was at a US grocery chain today and came across some...misleading price tags. I took a couple pictures intending to post them to Lemmy before going to bed, but I don't know which community would be appropriate for such a thing. The closest I could think of is A Boring Dystopia, but it doesn't seem quite right there.

Games that can be played on a handheld but aren't really meant for it (e.g. most stuff on the Steam Deck) doesn't really count.

Hello all!

I'm documenting a small FOSS project, and I'm looking for some soft that translates a documentation into a web page.

Something simple, with a side board that links the pages/titles/sub-titles, and is PC and Mobile compatible. Basically images, italics, bold and links, with titles and subtitles, would be nice 🙂.

Like the Lemmy install guide for example: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/install_docker.html

Any recommendations?

Thank you all!

...whether it was by a cult, by propaganda, by an algorithm, etc...

And did the person ever recover from it?

No more men's and women's league, no more "gender eligibility" requirements, a common dresscode, same standards and rules for all.

Edit: since it looks like people missing the word let: the suggestion isn't to force desegregation. It's to allow it or even make it the default. Someone else made a good suggestion: segregate by attributes specific to the sport. In boxing it's weight class, in basketball it could be height, in biking it could even be doped and non doped. Sex and gender need not be the very first thing to segregate by.

By “old”, I mean they were probably in college in the 1950s or earlier. Generally in the USA.

I went to college in what today they would call the late 1900s, and I definitely did not have that. What I experienced was a heavy workload, an interesting computer to mess around with, this new thing called the internet, and what I saw around for those who weren’t coping well was heavy drinking to get drunk and addictions to MUDs. No intellectualism.

Maybe what happened was that, in those biographies, they were probably generally culturally Jewish, from New York, scientists, writers, from a certain milieu. And the GI Bill happened in the 1940s and the flavor of college may have changed in the wake of that.

They may have been raised hearing the grown-ups talk over issues, increasingly participating as they grew up, whereas we were raised staring dumbly at sitcoms (“Hey, remember the time on Three’s Company when someone overheard something and there was a misunderstanding?”).

Every decade has its musical style that generally makes it easy to place what decade a song was written in if you haven't heard it before.

40s big band

50s rock and roll

60s essentially has its genre named after the decade or at least I can't think of anything I'd call a genre.

70s punk and beginnings of heavy metal, disco

80s electro synth, rap

90s grunge, dance, R&B, trance

Etc etc. Obviously these don't entirely define the music of the decade but are highly recognisable genres that can more often than not pinned down to a decade.

So my question is, since the 2000s I don't see as much differentiation but that might be because I'm too old (44) and not as exposed to be music as I was in my teens, so help me pretend I'm "hip" and "with it" by giving me some clues. I'm curious to know what you think defines the music of the 2020s, what defines the 2010s and what defines the 2000s. I.e. When someone says they are going to listen to noughties music what do they put on? Etc. Or have we reached a point where music has been explored to the point new genres are much rarer to establish?

I've been invited to attend a Tim Walz rally tonight, and I have no idea what to expect. Share your stories and get me pumped up to see our next VP!

Update: Everybody was right, lots of standing and clapping, but what I really didn't expect was the sense of family I felt with all these strangers around me. We'd bump into each other, and laugh it off, one guy was telling me about how his son was thinking about going to the college that I work at (I was still wearing my shirt from work), and we all just knew that we were working together to make great things happen. I'll probably skip the next one, but it was a great experience. I'm glad I went, and would recommend going to one if you have a chance, and a candidate you believe in.

The Geneva convention was established to minimise atrocities in conflicts. Israeli settlements in Gaza are illegal and violate the Geneva convention. Legality of Israeli settlements Article 51 of the Geneva convention prohibits indiscriminate attacks on civilian population yet Israel attacked hospitals with children inside. Whether you agree or not that Hamas were present, children cannot be viewed as combatants.so when no care was taken to protect them, does this not constitute a violation? According to save the children, 1 in 50 children in Gaza had been killed or injured. This is a very high proportion and does not show care being taken to prevent such casualties and therefore constitutes a violation.

So my question is simply, do supporters of Israel no longer support our believe in the Geneva convention, did you never, or how do you reconcile Israeli breaches of the Geneva convention? For balance I should add "do you not believe such violations are occurring and if so how did you come to this position?"

Answers other than only "they have the right to go after Hamas " please. The issue is how they are going after Hamas, not whether they should or not.

EDIT: Title changed to remove ambiguity about supporting Israel vs supporting their actions

I love cooking and I love people loving my cooking. However, I don't like getting told what to do for long term, so working in a kitchen or restaurant is probably a bad position for me. I've given years of thinking about working or running a food truck with a rotating menu. It'd be cool to travel around and see different people a day enjoying my different dishes, but I've never actually heard the everyday ins-and-outs of working in a food truck. What are some experiences (good or bad) working in a food truck that you could share?

I like the idea of being able to convert any audio track into its equivalent piano version.

Do we have the technology to do this or is it even possible?

I guess I'm curious about generations (namely GenZ and Alpha) who didn't live in a pre-Internet time. Like,

  • How was the concept first explained to you, or when did it click?
  • Do you understand how insane it is to have the aggregate of all human knowledge — the only comparable thing once being a physical library or university — one search away? That it's absolutely insane you can engage in a real-time conversation with someone on the opposite side of the world? That you can find niche communities in an instant?
  • Were your parents super strict about internet usage? How quickly did you find workarounds?

Got thrown out of the saddle by a horse today and got mildly fucked up. I want to invest in more protective gear than just a helmet but there's so many options. I want elbow pads and wrist guards definitely because of the bad scrapes and sprains I got. And maybe some kind of vest to protect me from any gut punches the horn of the saddle will give me if the horse tries to throw me again. My stomach has some nice big bruises from the horn.
