TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday his country has no intention of pursuing a free trade deal with China. He was responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada if America’s northern neighbor went ahead with a trade deal with Beijing.

Carney said his recent agreement with China merely cuts tariffs on a few sectors that were recently hit with tariffs.

Trump claims otherwise, posting that “China is successfully and completely taking over the once Great Country of Canada. So sad to see it happen. I only hope they leave Ice Hockey alone! President DJT”

The prime minister said under the free trade agreement with the U.S. and Mexico there are commitments not to pursue free trade agreements with nonmarket economies without prior notification.

“We have no intention of doing that with China or any other nonmarket economy,” Carney said. “What we have done with China is to rectify some issues that developed in the last couple of years.”

If you haven’t heard yet, in big 2026 we’re all ditching Microslop for systems that actually respect you, and we’re also breaking up with our ever-pricier Spotify subscriptions in exchange for actual ownership of the media we consume. So, for Fun February, I thought I’d take a look at some of the apps we can use to fill the Spotify-shaped void.

Emmabuntüs, a Linux distribution (and social project) used in humanitarian and educational projects, particularly in Africa and Europe, and especially in regions with limited access to new hardware, announced the release of Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 5 version 1.05 as an update within the ongoing 5 series, based on Debian 12.13.

Before we start, it’s important to note that the accessibility features introduced in version 1.05 are optional and user-activated through a dedicated interface to preserve familiarity for long-time users.

New components include a redesigned accessibility configuration window with speech synthesis support, integration of additional synthesizers (MBROLA and Piper), the addition of LIOS (Linux Intelligent OCR Solution), enhanced Braille reader support, and tools like KDE-Connect and scripts for managing battery level information, Braille embosser installation, and adapting visuals for impaired users.

GParted 1.8 has been released today as the latest stable version of this open-source partition editor software, which addresses several bugs to improve support for various filesystems.

Coming almost two years after GParted 1.6, the GParted 1.8 release is here to improve support for FAT filesystems by fixing a hang when setting FAT labels that match a root folder entry, as well as an issue where GParted displayed error messages along with the FAT label.

This release also adds support for setting the LBA flag when creating FAT16/32 filesystems, adds support for showing a warning for logical EFI System Partitions (ESPs), fixes GPT partition type GUID not copied in copy/paste mode, and fixes a crash that occurred due to GParted not checking for failure to load its icon.

Abu Hamza, the spokesperson of the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), says the group handed the coordinates for the location of the body of Ran Gvili to the mediators three weeks ago based on new information.

“But the enemy deliberately delayed the coordination and search operations,” Abu Hamza alleged.

The Israeli military says the remains of Ran Gvili, the last Israeli captive in the Gaza Strip, have been retrieved, clearing the way for the next phase of a ceasefire deal agreed in October.

“Following the completion of the identification process by the National Centre of Forensic Medicine, in cooperation with the Israel Police and the Military Rabbinate, [military] representatives informed the family of the late Ran Gvili that his body has been returned for burial,” said army spokesman Avichay Adraee.

"That Moment When"

Similar to TFW "That Feeling When"

What incentive would they have to develop a callback system

Well they don't develop it, it's a feature of whatever PBX/VoIP system they went with.

and use it, but delay the callbacks?

It wouldn't be the first nonsensical business decision that businesses latch onto for reasons. You could ask 10 different call center employees and get 10 different reasons why. I've personally heard a few different reasons from inept managers, call center staff being paid min wage so they don't care to people on the call back list get placed in a lower priority queue

The estimated hold time, IME it's not the most accurate thing in the world, but probably won't be off by whole hours

[-] cm0002@no.lastname.nz 2 points 1 month ago

I base it off the estimated hold time it tells you, IME it's not the most accurate thing in the world, but probably won't be off by whole hours

[-] cm0002@no.lastname.nz 8 points 1 month ago

You're lucky then, every time I've tried I either don't get a call back or it's hours later when just waiting would have only been 20 minutes

Lol you shouldn't believe random posts, I haven't been banned from any instances except .ml, for obvious reasons

[-] cm0002@no.lastname.nz 0 points 2 months ago

Oh, you're referring to the crossposting from .ml comms because of their authoritarian ideology (see below)

That doesn't apply here though, nearly all of the linux content I post is sourced and posted independently

Why am I cross-posting .ml content?

I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don't want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some niche comms.

Megathread on the issue

Some highlights from the link:

"Don't worry guys, the Uyghur Genocide was REALLY just birth control! ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/30580167

"See! nobody died IN Tiananmen Square, just AROUND it, so it doesn't count!!" ~ Davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/30673342

.ml admin, Nutomics continued transphobia https://lemmy.world/post/29222558 The original transphobic Comment from Nutomic: https://lemmy.world/post/18236068

"NK is actually good and anything counter to that is Western propaganda!" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/31595035

General negative sentiment to other instances who haven't "seen the way" yet ~davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/27426510

"If you don't support Russia then you just don't understand geopolitics" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/27352415

And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can't even put them all here because this comment would be really long.

I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda

On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like "Lemmy? Isn't that the place with a bunch of tankies?" Or "Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left". The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.

Well ig I did post a Phoronix article on it a few days ago, but in any case these aren't "copypasta" these are reputable outlets publishing this, I just copy the first couple paragraphs of the article for posting.

So, if you have a problem with how these reputable linux news outlets are publishing it, you'll have to take it up with them. I'm not personally writing these articles lmfao

They were so close to pulling off a Spotify, but they just had to chase that extra fucking dollar >:(

I know what you mean, but high compression/poor quality file artifacting does the same kinds of "blending"

But I don't believe it to be AI because it's way too consistent and small details that actually make sense. Like towards the end where the doggo is giving the treat side glances

Now faked with a dog trained specifically to do it, rather than something the dog just decided to do is on the table for sure, but hey AtLeastItsNot.Ai lmao
