No more duplicate posts

One of the things that the recent addition of the Feeds feature highlighted was how many cross-posts / duplicate posts there are. When you display posts from linux@lemmy.world, linux@programming.dev, linux@lemmy.ml, etc all the cross-posts make it get repetitive, really fast. The same thing happens on the home feed too although it's a bit less obvious because there's a wider range of subjects involved.

Except now, it doesn't, because PieFed de-duplicates your feed! And your home page, and your topics. Attached to this post is a screenshot showing how it works out - an article posted to 7 different places is only shown once despite me having joined most of those communities.

We're still figuring out whether it's a good idea to merge all the comments from all the cross-posts into one page and how to do that in a way that respects the different culture/rules in the communities that the posts were made in. It's a tricky UX and social question.

I've held off on adding a cross-post function to PieFed until now but it'll be added soon.

Aw man i was hoping for a big ui upgrade like when blender released version 2.8 that now even cinema4d is copying.

I fear gimp truly doesnt care about its ui/ux because technically everything you want to do is possible as long as you learn the ways ans they dont care to attract an audience thats not die hard FOSS people. For example schools havent been able to use it because theyre so deadset on their nsfw name and schools cant have kids googling gimp with the pictures that will show up

zero screenshots on the announcement page and zero screenshots on the homepage. Exactly what i expect from gimp lol

I've been trying different search engines and was pleasently surprised by startpage so i started looking into startmail too and then when i searched for startmail i saw they have a link directly to their dan bongino section https://www.startmail.com/bongino so thats a huge pass from me

EDIT: looks like they saw this thread or something and decided to have the link redirect to the homepage with the discount applied and removed his picture etc from their website. Here's an archive link: https://web.archive.org/web/20250120094905/https://www.startmail.com/bongino/

for those who dont know he’s a very conservative podcast host whos now the FBI deputy director who pushed the conspiracy theory that trump actually won the 2020 election and rallied against face masks and “In 2018, Bongino said, “My entire life right now is about owning the libs. That’s it.”” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Bongino

The fmhy wiki is great and i want to make a wiki with the same backend but cant find what it uses

Imma start subscribing to the RSS feeds of torrents made for specific channels before i watch ads.

If youtube wants to make their website so hostile its easier to get better versions of youtube videos without YouTube then those games will be played.

EDIT: turns out its my old external hard drive with issues not my ssd. All good! thanks for the help!

I agree but its not even an encrypted messenger. Almost no one uses the weak encryption and im pretty sure they offer decryption to governments considering they were threatened to be banned in russia and avoided it

I recently discovered this firefox\chrome extension that make streaming videos soo much faster. It also has built in subtitle support that lets you upload subtitles or search through opensubtitles. It's incredible how much faster videos load https://github.com/Andrews54757/FastStream

I've been looking into private servers so I can play WoW without paying blizzard and came across this private server that has a great reputation for its community and the fact that its open source. Maybe we can get a Lemmy guild going and play? It's called Chromiecraft https://www.chromiecraft.com/en/

Considering the Nazi’s were inspired by the US in many ways and the US continued promoting their racist opinions on immigrants, doing coups, and installing far right dictators around the world im more surprised the resurgence isnt bigger.

look at the genocide being funded and armed by the US in Palestine. Israel is invading and preparing for war with like 4? Countries already? Arguing they can rape people they detain and the US threatens the International Criminal Court after they deemed Netanyahu is a war criminal.

The US leads the world culture in a big way, the US is promoting an authoritarian who admires Hitler and the opposition to him continues sending bombs to a war criminal and threatens people who want to stop him.

Puts transphobes in quotation marks, bans everything he considers “sinophobia” even if you just mention literal policy in china. why are tankies so weird about so much stuff

[-] xnx@slrpnk.net 38 points 8 months ago

Paywall, does it have any shady stuff slipped in like KOSA, SOPA, and the other “protect the children” laws usually have?

[-] xnx@slrpnk.net 158 points 9 months ago

Elon pushes right wing and nazi adjacent stuff in the algorithm. Anyone he replies to also gets boosts and he constantly replies “!” To right wing conspiracy theorists etc

[-] xnx@slrpnk.net 58 points 9 months ago

This is awesome. Steam continues to release great stuff

[-] xnx@slrpnk.net 93 points 1 year ago

The apps would be fine if it wasnt for the enshittification and gamification aspect of it. Pay to unlock swipes and boosts and all that nonsense it so dystopian. We need non profits to start running pro social apps that are actually healthy
