Lets go, both Williams in points.

Stoked for the team, they're having a good run.

Leclerc out here driving a medium like a hard tyre.

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 1 year ago

The classic go off track turn one to keep position manoeuvre by Max there. F2 was full of it as well.

While I agree he should have given it back, Piastri also either steered into him/lost control and went deep into the corner further than a normal racing line. So curious what the stewards would think.

Edit: 5 penalty seconds for this, if you think it's penalty worthy, remains stupid. It should always be at least 10.

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I agree with the stewards here that it's on Max. Though he will happily keep track position and try to make a gap. This is a classic Max move, one of his signatures tbh. Wasn't it Mexico last year as well for example? Really kind of tired of this stuff from him honestly.

EDIT: I completely agree about the penalty though and I thought they already said they were going to use 10 sec as the baseline just for the reason that 5 is so often worth it.

All champions we had in the past 30 or so years were willing to play dirty. It's part of the sport really... or rather, soap opera where occasionally some cars drive around.

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 1 year ago

I absolutely know why he does it and it's very smart. Like I said, taking the 5 seconds is absolutely worth it.

I'm still kind of tired of it though.

Did you see that replay on the international feed just now? Piastri was going to ~~divebomb~~ force contact if he didn't go off. I think both their behaviours are fair play to try in racing, but saying this is classic unsportsmanlike behaviour seems like you're being influenced too much by British commentators.

It was literally the other way around with Hamilton in Monza but somehow both situations were his fault? He is ofcourse a driver that will race on the edge of the rules so of he gets punished for something he'll force others into it.

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 1 year ago

I'm not British and I don't listen to the British feed, but I have admittedly seen this move from Max enough that I might admittedly carry some prejudice from that.

[-] DV8@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago

Fair enough, I do listen to the British commentators since they are just more pleasant to listen to vocally for me than the Dutch speaking ones. But their commentating is just always anti-Verstappen. Yet even they ceded after the replay of the incident that Piastri is lucky he just barely got control of his car in time.

Sky or F1? If you have access to the official F1 colmentators, they tend to have a much more neutral view.

Also, I'm currently watching the F1 stream synced with audio from Grand Prix Radio (Olav Mol & Jack Plooij). So, less glorifying of Max. (I'm currently watching with my mother whose level of English is much lower, so prefers Dutch commentary.)

[-] DV8@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

F1TV international feed with Palmer etc. I know they're not the most neutral and I don't expect them to be. I just enjoy the hype they're good at bringing. But I do think many people let their opinion on the race be influenced by them. (Just like if you watch MMA you'll be influenced by the often very dumb opinion of Rogan).

I'm Flemish, so the accent of any Dutch person grates too much for me. ;-) ('g' doesn't have to sound like a failed gear change every damn word ;-) )

[-] donuts@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

As a Dutchie I feel this, whenever the feed glitches and it resets, it defaults to Dutch and it's a race to turn it back to the English feed before I cringe at the commentary.

You could try listening to the other English feed, there's nothing like Croft and Brundle imo even though they are very likely to talk a lot about Hamilton and Norris

[-] hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

Bwoah that was close for Alonso

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 1 year ago

Making him look silly honestly. Gotta be smarter than that if you want to be WDC.

[-] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 year ago

Did we miss the incident with Lawson and Doohan? No way is what we saw on screen 2x as bad as Piastri and Verstappen

[-] DV8@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Can't remember seeing it, but I must admit to spending time here too when it looks slow because I am happy other people on Lemmy also like F1.

[-] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 year ago

We saw an overtake where the car that overtook went maybe a tyre's width over the white line. I wasn't even sure they'd went off the track from the camera angle we had. That's why I'm wondering if it was another incident the next lap maybe

[-] Contentedness@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah what I saw for from Lawson going deep didn't seem like a 10 second penalty, dude can't seem to catch a break!

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 1 year ago

Classic FIA inconsistency.

[-] blackstrat@lemmy.fwgx.uk 2 points 1 year ago

Was given leniency as it was the first lap. The penalties are a nonsense though. If anything, being so early in the race and there being no time limit when to take the penalty means the 5s is much much lighter than 10s in the middle of the race and pitstops. I would rather see consistent 5s penalties and they have 3 laps to take it in. So you can't do a lunge, ignore the track limits and scamper off in clean air for 25 laps, which is what Max clearly wanted to do and almost managed it. That would have been a tragedy of the stewarding if it had happened that way.

That's how you clear a 7-time world champion Lando.

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 1 year ago

Absolute madman to pull an overtake there. Piastri is the real deal.

[-] hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

What's Red Bull's game here? I think they lost 2-3 seconds to Piastri already by pitting late

[-] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 1 year ago

C'mon Leclerc, don't let Norris past after that fantastic stint earlier!

[-] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 1 year ago

Nice, well-deserved third :)

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

"That was Gabi, he might not have a manager tonight anymore" - Piastri on the Bortoleto-Alonso situation ๐Ÿ˜…

[-] GreenEngineering3475@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Sainz smooth operating for Williams right now

[-] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Bwoah

Welcome back Kimi Raikkonen.

[-] GreenEngineering3475@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Is it just Max or the Red Bull is fast here, that 5s penalty doesn't look that threatening to Max's race.

[-] DV8@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

The 5s penalty does almost nothing for anyone. It's way too low a penalty for anything. Regardless of how good your car is. It's only annoying if you got lucky earlier with a car where you're actually out of position where your car should be.

[-] hagelslager@feddit.nl 0 points 1 year ago

Commentary here speculated it was probably 5s because of Piastri being partially responsible for pushing Verstappen off, where Lawson took full blame and got 10s.

[-] DV8@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Sounds like a weird way to reason though, no? That's what should be called a race incident if they're both partially at fault.

[-] hagelslager@feddit.nl 1 points 1 year ago

Stewards and consistency ๐Ÿ˜…

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 0 points 1 year ago

So who do we think is causing the inevitable safety car/red flag? Any bets?

[-] koella@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Tsunoda getting a bit overconfident, maybe? Hope it won't be him, though.
