It has classics from Backgammon (and its multiplayer equivalent, Ludo) to Terraforming Mars and up to modern titles released this year. Many are totally free to play with just an account. Some are paywalled behind premium access, but you only need one person at the table with a premium subscription to start the game, and then everyone else can participate for free.

You can play in real time with people or turn-based across days at a dozen different virtual tables simultaneously (it notifies you, either by email or other settings, whenever it's your turn).

It handholds you through legal moves, so you can use the platform to learn new games. Some of my in-person board game purchases came from games I learned here online!

Given the small size of the communities, you might also consider using !boardgames@sopuli.xyz for your discussions instead of starting a new niche comm :)

[-] Prathas@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, I know about that as well! I guess I could mention it there, too, and double up any content.

[-] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

and double up any content.

This tends to splinters discussions as comments from a post on one community don't show up on the same post on the other community

!fedigrow@lemm.ee usually recommends to merge similar communities, you can have a look at a few recent posts

Feel free to discuss with @AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works , they mod !boardgames@sopuli.xyz and are generally quite nice ๐Ÿ˜„

Sorry, is it not linked? I'm new to this.

You linked to https://lemmy.zip/c/BoardGameArena, which is usually fine, but sometimes causes issues for users who are not on lemmy.zip.

it's generally good practice to include the "instance agnostic" link too.

You linked to https://lemmy.zip/c/BoardGameArena, which is usually fine, but sometimes causes issues for users who are not on lemmy.zip.

It takes (most) people away from their home instance, to another one where they are no longer logged in and their preferences are not applied. Better to use a ! link.

I did not know, thanks!

[-] roofuskit@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Didn't lemmy.zip de-federate with .world? So you're announcing to a community where most users can't see the content in your community.

[-] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Wait, you're on a .world account, in a .world comm. How are you replying to this post?

[-] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

I have a lemmy.zip account, they still federate LW

[-] Prathas@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Shoot. Ironic! I didn't know how to check... I wonder why they unlinked...

[-] roofuskit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I believe .zip complained about the lack of moderation in .world. .world is quite large so the mods can't wrangle everyone. It's easy for a small instance to point to a big one and say they aren't doing their jobs, in reality it's a less work to police a fraction of the users.

[-] Demigodrick@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

We haven't defederated with .world.

[-] roofuskit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I must have confused it with another instance.

[-] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

I have a lemmy.zip account, they still federate LW

Ooh, anyone know if it's got some way to play BattleTech? I don't see an official game for it, I wonder if there's some legally distinct game I'm not finding in search.

Either way, I dig it. Tabletop Sim in my phone browser is dope

[-] Prathas@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago

Asmodee owns BGA, so they would need a copyright agreement with BT's owner, and probably a lotta other stuff. It's not freestyle like TTS; it's mostly 2D (only Santorini AFAIK is 3D on BGA) and each game is specifically and meticulously replicated.

[-] roofuskit@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's not really a tabletop sim, it's games turned into web apps. You're looking for tabletop simulator on Steam.

Rules

The rules for behavior are a straight carry over of Mastodon.World's rules. You can click the link but we've reposted them here in brief, as a guideline. We will continue to use the Mastodon.World rules as the master list. Over all, be nice to each other and remember this isn't a community built around debate. For the rules about formatting your posts, scroll down to number 2.

1. Follow the rules of Mastodon.world, which can be found here.

A. Provide an inclusive and supportive environment. This means if it isn't rulebreaking and we can't be supportive to them then we probably shouldn't engage.

B. No illegal content.

C. Use content warnings where appropriate. This means mark your submissions NSFW if need be.

D. No uncivil behavior. This includes, but is not limited to: Name Calling; Bullying; Trolling; Disruptive Commenting; or Personal Criticisms.

E. No Harrassment. As an example in relation to Transgender people this includes, deadnaming, misgendering, and promotion of conversion therapy. Similarly Misogyny, Misandry, and Racism are also banned here.

2. Include a community or instance title and description in your post title. - A following example of this would be New Communities - A place to post new communities or instances all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

3. Follow the formatting. - The formatting as included below is important for people getting universal links across Lemmy as easily as possible.

Formatting

Please include this following format in your post:

[link text](/c/community@instance.com)

This provides a link that should work across instances, but in some cases it won't

You should also include either:

!community@instance.com

or instance.com/c/community

FAQ:

Q: Why do I get a 404?

A: At least one user in an instance needs to search for a community before it gets fetched. Searching for the community will bring it into the instance and it will fetch a few of the most recent posts without comments. If a user is subscribed to a community, then all of the future posts and interactions are now in-sync.

Q: When I try to create a post, the circle just spins forever. Why is that?

A: This is a current known issue with large communities. Sometimes it does get posted, but just continues spinning, but sometimes it doesn't get posted and continues spinning. If it doesn't actually get posted, the best thing to do is try later. However, only some people seem to be having this problem at the moment.
