“Well I’ve been rolling down this well-worn road…”

[-] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago

I'm already working on a tool to replace discord for my gaming group. Planning on rolling out a stack of open source IM and Voice/Video chat with ActivityPub for text chat rooms.

Integrating them all into one app is where I'll have trouble, especially since when replacing big corpo tools they need to work perfectly the first time or nobody willvdver want to use it.

Can you provide a list of your stack? Doing the same has crossed my mind but I haven't done much research yet

[-] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

I'm still early in the research phases but so far the plan is a combined client for Galene and Mastadon. The current plan is to rip apart the apps as they exist and pull out the chunks useful for my needs, then build a basic webapp to interface with them that I can share with my friends.

Ideally I'd like to eventually roll out a docker image of the server stack as well so anyone can host it with just a couple clicks.

That's a big project, I respect your ambition

We need an fos alternative

I agree. Discord actually had a metaphor that I think plays well for federation. Specifically, they called each group a server. And organized the UI in a way that would make federation pretty transparent.

The only consufsing bit would be the concept of a home server login ID. Like, the lack of a central identity provider. But I think that isn't a show stopper.

I kinda wish there were fed ID providers that all fed servers used for login and authentication. I'm not sure exactly how that would work, but being able to have a single identity across mastodon, Lemmy, and any other fed service would really simplify things once you were in the fediverse.

Fuck Discord, I hope they go pedal to the medal and destroy the company in record time.

Sorry, all I do is win, so the floor of my car is covered in medals...

Was the ActiBlizz guy the one involved in all the sexual harassment?

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 8 points 2 days ago

ActiBlizz guy

sexual harassment

I'm afraid you'll need to narrow this down a bit further.

[-] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

No I don't, given that it's taking about the former CEO. Unless there were issues with multiple AB CEOs that I'm not aware of?

Matrix is a good replacement for the text and image bit of Discord, but can anyone suggest a good alternative for the voice comms?

When you had the foresight to walk away several years ago and you’ve just been on the sidelines watching it get worse and worse and worse.

[-] Nima@leminal.space 10 points 2 days ago

i would leave right now if I could take my communities with me. but I sadly have to wait until the app is so unusable that EVERYONE is leaving the app in droves.

That's the kind of logic that keeps shitty platforms afloat

[-] Nima@leminal.space 1 points 2 days ago

I'm the server owner. these are active hubs. I'm not gonna just destroy my own communities just because some random person on the internet wants to place blame on someone with no power to change the platform.

you're blaming the wrong people for discord getting shitty.

Was anyone else having trouble making a revolt account yesterday? I kept getting an error, I assume their servers are experiencing an influx of new users
