Magic 8-ball says: enshittification is in your future

[-] Wahots@pawb.social 15 points 9 hours ago

I was like "how could discord be any worse?" Then this drops xD

[-] andybytes@programming.dev 4 points 8 hours ago

I just don't take anything serious... I refuses to pay for anything and always a inch from burning it all down. Social media just is not for me but I love harvesting knowledge.

[-] FabledTurtle@feddit.nl 6 points 9 hours ago

Is this the guy that wanted people to pay for reloading ingame? Society really is built to make idiots rich.

[-] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

I've coped long enough, that's the final straw for me.

I'm cancelling my $3/month subscription and putting $1 to my instance, $1 to Wikipedia, and $1 to the Internet Archive. Not a lot but it's better than discord.

~~Doesn't seem like I can use PayPal for Lemmy and I don't wanna go through the process of another payment provider :/~~

Patrion supports PayPal

Anyone looking for an alternative, Revolt is FOSS and pretty much on par with Discord in 2015. They have voice chat and video chat is in development on their roadmap. You can even self-host your own server.

[-] AugustWest@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago

I never got the appeal of discord, but that's fine.

The use of it as a support for a project? So bad.

Hopefully it will collapse and go away.

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 1 points 6 hours ago

Network effect. The platform itself isn't great, but it's reached a critical mass of popularity.

[-] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 21 points 1 day ago

RIP discord.

[-] archonet@lemy.lol 151 points 2 days ago

Oh yeah, we're about to see things get really shitty on Discord.

Back to self-hosted teamspeak then I guess

user entered your channel

[-] Baguette@lemm.ee 51 points 1 day ago

Discord is never going to be profitable lmao

It can be a loss leader for microsoft, but at the end of the day, discord will always lose money. The operational cost of discord is way too high

This change just means more enshittification like with every ceo change.

Honestly they should just go full on points shops for spending money on xbox, like steam. Give out points to use for customization. That way they could at least make some incentive to use xbox and probably boost sales.

[-] qevlarr@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

But why? People just want to talk and chat. The technology has been around for ages! Let users host their own servers

[-] vaguerant@fedia.io 109 points 2 days ago

"All right, everybody. I know there's been a sexism problem here at Discord, and I'm here to change that. If we really work hard and power through, I truly believe that we can work our way up to the kinds of numbers I was able to achieve back at Activision Blizzard."

[-] nthavoc@lemmy.today 31 points 2 days ago

I picture him saying this while he hangs a picture up of Bill Cosby in the board room. Yes, that was a thing at Activision/Blizzard. Time to start finding a new platform. Peak enshitification achieved.

[-] Fingolfinz@lemmy.world 54 points 2 days ago

So the end of discord is nigh

[-] KhanLee@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 day ago

o7 rip Discord, you wont be missed.

[-] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 18 points 1 day ago

I mean I’ll miss it. Current FOSS options are not up to par

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 1 points 6 hours ago

I like Matrix, but it isn't exactly the easiest platform to use and definitely has some jankiness with voice/video calls.

[-] ArtificialHoldings@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

Revolt is pretty good! Most of the features you want from discord are already there. It's FOSS and servers can be self-hosted.

[-] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 22 hours ago

Revolt has been super dead every time I use it. I can’t get a feel for it because any communities I find with any chatter usually go silent within a month

[-] ArtificialHoldings@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

The public servers that are just operating on discovery - sure. I have a private Discord with friends I'll be looking to transfer, as well as a community with external intake sources.

[-] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago

I mean it’s also not federated. That’s got to hurt

[-] ArtificialHoldings@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Maybe for this crowd. Almost no services I use aside from email were federated, before I went to Lemmy and Mastodon. And now it's email, Lemmy, and Mastodon. Average users just chasing a good experience don't really care about federation, despite its benefits.

[-] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

They care if the platform is a graveyard, which Federation helps with. that’s my point. Not that most people sit down and literally go “man I just want Federated services.”

[-] ArtificialHoldings@lemmy.world 1 points 10 minutes ago

Oh true. I think it would be difficult for a chat platform like Revolt to federate correctly with other existing services though. Channel permissions, role permissions, bot functionality - I think it would be difficult to honor this stuff with federation. For example, Matrix and Revolt don't have the same system of role permissions.

[-] jsomae@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 day ago

element isn't bad tbh. I've been using it lately, and it's actually caught up a lot.

Okay boys and girls, time to start discussing the next migration. Where we goin'?

[-] weariedfae@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 hours ago

I'm enjoying Element/Matrix so far.

Enshitification applies to EVERYTHING

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 22 points 2 days ago

Linux hasn't enshittified. Neither has the fediverse. Enshittification applies to everything corporate and for-profit.

Problem is people are fucking lazy and will not move to another platform. I want teamspeak and vent back but people nowadays won't even try. So we are forced to keep using it. People have no balls to stand up to corpos just to learn something new. It's infuriating.

[-] AugustWest@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

Uh... You stand up to corpos. Just leave. Nobody is forcing you to use it.

[-] applemao@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

That's well and good for us, but then we are just the isolated few who do it compared to all our friends that stay with discord because they're comfortable on it.

[-] AugustWest@lemm.ee 3 points 22 hours ago

Gotta take a stand. There have been a few things where I gotta tell friends that I can't do this. If they won't change... Meh. Gotta have principles.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago

https://matrix.org/ecosystem/bridges/

You can use matrix and still keep in touch with the lazy people. Having a place for people to go when they eventually get fed up will help a ton.

[-] applemao@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago
[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 1 points 6 hours ago

It should be noted that these only support messaging (including media attachments) but not voice/video calls. I've been using bridging for a few years now though.
