On one hand it is nice to see companies give back.

On the other hand, their revenue was $249 million in 2023 and their income after expenses/taxes was 8 million.

  • 120,000 / 249,000,000 = 0.048% of revenue.
  • 120,000 / 8,000,000 = 1.5% of their income.

It just seems like a small amount to give back for how much they are bringing in.

100k is very low considering their revenue but Canonical employs people that work on open source projects as well.

Correct but they are one of the most visible open source production companies in the world. They should go ahead and steadily put 1% of their revenue as donations. It would do much good and work as an example. "If we as a small company can do this, everybody can." That said, they should not be for profit at all.

Yes, I should as well

lol! The highest amount donated was $496.95 and the lowest was $20. Source. These are all services canonical relies on. $20 is a slap in the face, $496.95 isn’t much better depending on how much that code is used.

The sum says 20K, so that's 1/6th of what they'll donate this year, if the article is correct.

At least they put a date on it. Jeff bezos claimed he would donate 12 billion dollars or around that to climate change initiatives.

6 years later and I have kept track of it for the first 4-5 years. He had donate a whopping <3% of what he pledged. Of course he paid a lot more to pollute more than he saved with rockets.

Canonical is mostly a leech on open source.
