More like now you get 48 hours to think about how you have to come back and do it all again

[-] MelodiousFunk@kbin.social 17 points 11 months ago

Back on the hamster wheel, Sisyphus. That boulder ain't gonna move itself.

The essay concludes, "The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Yeah that's gonna be a no from me, dawg.

Bold of you to assume I only did 40 and that I’ll be allowed “days off”

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 6 points 11 months ago

I've been there.

But it's the best part of your kids' week! Look at how happy they are.

I'm not complaining, I love my kids and I really don't think that being with them is the worst part of the week. I'm just very, very tired.

I have some very demanding cats, so I know exactly how you two feel

[-] snake@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Yes, when you have kids the weekend is actually the worst part of the week!

[-] sheogorath@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I consider myself very lucky because I have a good relationship with my in-laws so usually if I get really tired for the week and need to unwind on the weekend I just dump the kids at their gramps place and both parties will be happy.

[-] kersk@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

I wouldn't say the worst, but definitely the hardest.

[-] Naja_kaouthia@sh.itjust.works 17 points 11 months ago

Well my boss left for the day so I have my mouse sitting on my jiggler and I’m watching Deep Space Nine on one of my iPads.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 9 points 11 months ago

You're living the life

[-] Secret300@sh.itjust.works 15 points 11 months ago

Idk how people do it. I've gotten so used to the job I have now where I work 40hrs on the weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and I'm off all week. Sometimes the weeks still feel short

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

How do you work 40 hours in 3 days?

[-] Sargteapot@lemmy.nz 8 points 11 months ago

3 13 hour days....

[-] FFbob@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

I do 48 hours in 2 days every week. Bit more spread out, but still just 2 days of work.

[-] Secret300@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago

8 hours Friday, 2-10. Then 16 hours Saturday Sunday 6am-10pm

[-] Strepto@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago
[-] grayman@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

I knew a lineman that did two 14s and a 12 every week.

[-] Secret300@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago

Direct support personal. I aid anyone with physical or mental disabilities

[-] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

Actual productive time is maybe approaching 27-30 hours, tops.

[-] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

Well look at this overachiever.

[-] Tb0n3@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 months ago

Not truck drivers. That's 70 hours a week. 70 productive with 34 hours to reset and do it all again.

[-] jennwiththesea@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

😳 That is awful. You deserve better.

[-] blanketswithsmallpox@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

That's 3-4 days for me tyvm.

Downsides: rotating schedule, 10 hour days occasionally require working 5-6 days in a row pending when people take time off. We set it up so there are overlap on a schedule in the evening though, so you also have to work a abnormal shift ~4 times every two months.

I'd still prefer it over 8x5s. Those long weekends are glorious.

8x4s is what I'll be pressing for when I can.

[-] Chetzemoka@startrek.website 4 points 11 months ago

3x12s for life 💪 God damn having a three day weekend every week is such a quality of life upgrade

[-] trailing9@lemmy.ml 8 points 11 months ago

A question for experts on Marxist theory.:

If work wasn't alienated, would people want to work more than 40 hours or be happy when working 40 hours?

Dimensions of alienated labor

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marx%27s_theory_of_alienation

[-] MelodiousFunk@kbin.social 10 points 11 months ago

I'm not an expert, but it seems to me that if the labor isn't alienated, then it becomes less about the hours and more about what's accomplished.

[-] iByteABit@lemm.ee 9 points 11 months ago

No need to be an expert.

When I'm working on a project that is mine and has my name on it, and I think that it'll help me or someone else in a meaningful way, I'll happily lose sleep over perfecting it.

When I'm just a cog in a giant faceless machine that wants only to maximize profits, I don't really care what the hell happens with the product as long as I get paid.

[-] blazera@kbin.social 7 points 11 months ago
