Hello र नमस्ते to सबै नेपालीहरू! there are not a lot of us here on Lemmy, and you are also likely seeing this a long time after it's been posted. If that's the case, please leave a comment anyways. I will keep this account active for quite some time (maybe even for as long as lemmy.dbzer0.com lasts), so I will try my best to reply.

Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are the main social media platforms in Nepal. These platforms are algorithmically tuned to maximize time spent on the apps, which has resulted in overly polarized public opinions and too much misinformation.

These central platforms are also prone to bans and government restrictions, and because these platforms are also so privacy-invasive, online activity can easily be linked to people which is bad news for genuine activists and journalists.

Many institutions also treat these centralized platforms, especially Meta-owned platforms, as if they're the only places on the internet. Many organizations don't even have their own websites and operate wholly via Facebook or Instagram.

So, I wonder if we can implement decentralized social media in Nepal somehow. That's all. Feel free to tell me what you think in the comments, It'd be nice to start a genuine discussion with Nepalis.
