Wealth above, and death below: in recent history this arrangement has proven to be remarkably tolerable. Everyone of course is aware that ever more people are immiserated and discarded, that ever more of the Earth is destroyed. But for the better off, the very worst is kept at a very comfortable distance, and life more or less maintains its rhythms.
