Ken Saro-Wiwa was a prominent Nigerian author, activist and television producer. He garnered attention by leading a nonviolent campaign against the multinational petroleum industry. That industry recklessly dumped petroleum waste in Saro-Wiwa’s home region, the Nigerian delta, which gave rise to severe environmental damage.

Saro-Wiwa was born on 10 October 1941 into a prominent Ogoni family. As a child, he demonstrated a talent for scholarship and, upon completing his secondary schooling at Government College Umuahia, he won a scholarship to read English at the University of Ibadan.

He taught briefly at the University of Lagos after graduating in 1965. But he soon left that position to pursue a bureaucratic career, and served as a federal administrator for the Bonny Island oil terminal. Nigeria experienced a civil war between 1967 and 1970, and during the conflict, Saro-Wiwa supported the government’s goal of preventing the state of Biafra from seceding. He gained an appointment as the commissioner for education in the Rivers State as a reward for his support.

He left government service in 1973 because he advocated greater autonomy for the Ogoni people. But he achieved considerable success in that decade in a variety of commercial ventures in real estate and retail. In the 1980s, though, he shifted his focus from business to television production, writing and journalism. He wrote a satirical television series, Basi & Company, which looked at looked at the lives of gang members in Lagos. The series was reportedly the most popular television series in Africa in its day. He also published books such as Sozaboy, and Forest of Flowers, and wrote a regular column for the Lagos Times. He managed to gain an audience beyond Nigeria due to his newspaper writing.

Saro-Wiwa served in one presidential administration in the late 1980s. But his service did not last for long and by the end of the decade he had come to believe that corruption was an entrenched feature of Nigeria’s successive military regimes and that that unfortunate state of affairs could not be challenged from within the existing political structure.

In 1990, he helped found the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP). He also wrote the Ogoni Bill of Rights and worked with Greenpeace International. He became the principal opposition leader in Nigeria. And MOSOP was one of the most visible groups that stood in opposition to economic exploitation of Nigeria’s oil resources, and the concomitant environmental fallout.

But his position atop the oppositional hierarchy was far from secure. MOSOP divided into competing factions. Some people within the fold advocated and resorted to violence. And some Ogoni tribal leaders believed in ongoing negotiation with international oil companies. So he found himself between people with irreconcilable approaches.

On 21 May 1994, four people who opposed Saro-Wiwa were killed in an attacked orchestrated by a group affiliated with MOSOP. Saro-Wiwa had typically decried the use of violence. But he was arrested and tried by a Nigerian military court all the same along with eight other people. The defendants were referred to as the Ogoni Nine. Saro-Wiwa was sentenced to death. And despite international protestation regarding the unfairness of the procedure, he was executed by hanging on 10 November 1995 before he could appeal his conviction.

I said yesterday I'd start reading Palestine + 100. It's a collection of science fiction stories imagining Palestine in 2048 (100 years after the Nabka in 1948) by various Palestinian authors. I liked Iraq + 100, so when I saw this in a bookshop I had to pick it up.

First story: Song of the Birds by Saleem Haddad

spoilerIt's the matrix. The Israelis got so good at technology and colonialism that the Palestinians live in a simulation. Some people recognize this, and discover killing yourself in the simulation boots you back out to real life. Seeing all the clues and the realities of living in Gaza seep into the utopian future city is really eerie and suspenseful, but once you realize it is the matrix I feel the story just kind of drops the theatrics a bit. I'm unsure what message I'm supposed to take away from the fact liberating yourself involves suicide. But I am grateful this story sticks to the anti-colonial message and doesn't try to weasel out by saying the colonizers have their best interest at heart or the simulation of freedom is an acceptable compromise.

Strong start to the book. 4/5

"And so Al Simmons just dies?"

erererererer

"Yeah, see, he's betrayed by his superiors and assassinated by his best friend, who's actually Chapel from Rob Liefeld's Youngblood series."

rtrtrtrtrt

"Wow, I guess it's going to be hard for him to get out of that jam, what with being dead and all."

erererererer

"Actually, it's gonna be super easy. Barely an inconvenience."

gigachad yes, I support Ingsoc and the party, how could you tell?

[-] ilyenkov@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

Fr though, okay. "War is peace" yes, to attain a just peace, we need to engage in global class war - and "peace" without doing this just means letting to bourgeoisie wage war on us. "Freedom is slavery" yes, the anglo notion of peace is nothing but slavery to base passions, true freedom requires shackling our worst impulses. Freedom is the grasping of necessity.

"Ignorance is strength" okay, I haven't figured this one out yet.

Anyways, gorgorg'well was a disgusting little snitch and colonial cop. But war is peace, and newspeak is honestly kinda cool,

True crime fans love to think about bigotry only as long as it allows them to feel superior to dumb hog policemen(who are simply incompetent and not evil), but when its applied to them in a situation like, "People thought the idea that Jeffrey Dahmer was sodomized to death was funny because of homophobia" then its suddenly crybaby moralizing and being self righteous.

Not a complex idea to state that if you believe sexual violence is funny or righteous as long as its in the right contexts, then that will poison your soul and affect your views and feelings on other people, particularly the direct groups of people that the person belongs to, who you first decided was justifiably raped.

Edit: "Your mistake here is in assuming that people think of Dahmer as a gay serial killer, actually no one does that, people only care about the cannibalism and acid stuff, you are spreading propaganda by saying people knew Dahmer was gay" <- complete fucking true crime freak who thinks everyone is as freakishly interested in the brutal details of serial killers as he is, rather than focusing on the stuff you can talk about in "polite" society, like how the gays are all sex freaks.

Like literally just how fucking little self awareness is that, the average person absolutely is more likely to know Dahmer was gay over knowing the intimate details of how he tortured victims.

True crime is incredibly reactionary, among other things.

I used to try listening to true crime podcasts and genuinely every single host wanted people to be locked away forever over their minor crimes "because then it wouldn't have gotten to this point". Theyrr also incredibly bigoted and across the board focus more on crimes committed by immigrants, poc, trans, mentally ill, and poor people.

India went from being a founder of the Non Aligned Movement fighting against colonialism to showing "solidarity" with a state actively doing colonialism.

Dissolution of USSR etc etc

So sometimes at my work I have to do CPR classes. The easy way I like to remember is two thrusts a seccond for two or three inches. Which really feels like a good set up to a joke to me.

I didn't realize how much public, historical footage online is just locked by these websites selling them for HUNDREDS of dollars. It's frustrating that I got I have to settle with a big ass gettyimages watermark
