The mentioning of Hachinosu got me thinking about a little thing that annoys me a bit. I think Hachinosu is funny, but also somewhat boring and uncool, because it's such a flat trope. Everyone there is just completely evil, leering drunks, ready to cut their own mother's head of and sell it for a drink. The slavers government send people they didn't like there, so shouldn't some really cool people have ended up there? Or just normal people who got in the way or committed the severe crime of being poor? Just like Australia.

Or maybe they have a three tier system: the work camp on the endless bridge where Robin ended up gets all the prisoners who are really just good honest people who got in the way of the government. Hachinosu gets all the cartoonishly evil caricatures of pirates. And Impel Down gets a carefully curated mixture of 70 % the same as Hachinosu and the rest are either ruffians with a golden heart who were led astray or secret revolutionaries, both of which end up in level 5.5 eventually.

I guess many fans like it, because they are like "finally a place with real pirates, like black beard". And by "real", they mean the caricature they mistake for historic pirates. But if you know anything about real pirate history in the Caribbean you know it's far from black and white.

It seems it was just a cruel form of punishment where youd be left on an island to starve and no one would come help, but actually the people there organized once they stumbled upon the gold. Unlike Australia, I don't think there was a original indigenous society that was invaded and colonized.

Its funny that the WG created their own worst nightmare by being incredibly cruel. We also possibly see the first instance of the warlord system with Rocks offering to take out pirate island.

I think what Oda is highlighting with rocks and BB piracy is that they only seek to organize to benefit themselves instead of the collective and that they aren't connected by bonds of love with their respective crews. True revolutionary potential comes from the tight bonds that crews like the straw hats have.

You're right, that contrast is definitely important.

I do find the fans who wants to mention the "Real pirates" annoying.

As far as hachinosu goes, I don't think its filled with leering pirates or even a jaya resemblance. I think the implication is that celestials want that under their rule just like kuma's country. So they will label it as a "lawless place with crime tm".

They sought xebec but it didn't work out. Hey it worked out for them in other instances, like doflamingo.

[-] woodenghost@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Yes, that would make sense.

[-] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

WTF. Rocks legit rocks. Holy shit. He really broke into that flower room and flexed on imu. He killed an admiral and took 5 kings. big-cool

I can't wait to see the siege of hachinosu. Maybe god valley too.

Will harald be really entangled with these folks?. Also damn davy back fights lets-fucking-go

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Maybe this turns into an Oda lecture about adventurism. Be more like Dragon (...) and less like Rocks.

Also we may just get our equivalent of the Rocky Port Incident since it's clear Oda's not going to have the time to draw that.

[-] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 3 points 4 days ago

I guess its more on how someone like xebec really muddies the water. Like harald has larger goals to gain sovereignty for elbaf. But larger players wanna use him for other shit. Xebec does hurt the ruling class but only of a false consciousness.

Also yeah oda can probably skip drawing I guess. But it seems important for rocks characterization and his eventual demise.

Man Rocks had a lot going on, he single handedly infiltrated Mariejois and spoke with Imu.... And wtf is a Davy Jonesian pirate???

Broke:

  • "The D stands for Dreams!"
  • "The D stands for Destiny!"
  • "No the D actually stands for Devil!"
  • "The D doesn't actually mean anything at all!"

Woke:
THE D STANDS FOR DAVY JONES LOCKER YAR HARR HARR

[-] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 5 points 5 days ago

Bespoke: D stands for democrat cause oda loves hilldawg and DNC.

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 3 points 4 days ago

D stands for Denny's and IMU really hates Dennys

[-] woodenghost@hexbear.net 2 points 4 days ago

Wasn't there a theory about rocks being inside teach somehow?

[-] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago

I think so. I mean there's always been a theory about black beard has two or three people in him cause of his devil fruit.

[-] Quai@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

20 years later, an early arc finally makes sense and the world grows larger. OP has a special way with these lore dumps not always being overly dramatic. I no longer feel like the series is being rushed through the "final" stages.

[-] drinkinglakewater@hexbear.net 5 points 5 days ago

I can now no longer tell people to skip Long Ring Long Land sadness

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago

LRLL gets so much hate because the one piece anime made it so long with extra filler games and even did a second foxy filler arc.

In One Pace, LRLL is like 1-2 episodes and it's paced extremely well, usopp, nami, robin -> zoro and sanji -> luffy vs. foxy and it foreshadows the crew being torn apart later in Water 7. Also Aokiji was supposed to be on the island as the post-arc treat but Toei fucked it up and put him on another island which made the arc seem even more like filler.

[-] drinkinglakewater@hexbear.net 2 points 4 days ago

By the second Foxy arc it definitely felt like they were gonna be used as the One Piece filler Team Rocket.

The anime also kinda screwed up the tone of the boxing match. The manga made it feel like Luffy was a little more on the ropes and the anime was just cartoony.

Also FACE TATTOO strikes again

Full reaction:

Loki saying he doesn't believe his dad would come back for him if he's hurt echos the alienation he feels from the whole of Elbaph. In all likelihood, Harald is most likely the only person who loves him unconditionally since we see Harald mourning over Estrida's passing even though he and her were only matched due to politics.sad-boi

Rocks is silent as he readies his sword to decimate a child. We have his laugh "Voha-ha-ha." Later on, we can see that Loki didn't snitch on Rocks for brutalizing him with haki which I think Harald would use as the excuse to push Rocks out of his life and Elbaph for good. Loki idolizing Rocks is interesting, maybe it's his "Come to Ida" moment where he realizes he was just born big and that he isn't invincible. Also, who wouldn't find the Rocks pirates interesting (echoing Luffy idolizing Shanks and his crew)?

Perhaps Rocks did not take Loki with him not because of concern for his safety (like Shanks with Luffy) but that he'd know that Harald would never stand for it and wanted to respect his friend's wishes (or avoid a ancient giant coming for his head with that mythical bloodlust)

I really like the "paper tiger" theme that Oda is keeping with people being able to invade the Holy Land. It's possibly not that hard for someone to invade but it's everything afterwards that changes. The World Government's power isn't in personal strength but their hegemonic power.

I think Rocks understands that somehow, this whole thing is much bigger than Imu and that Imu is just the one sitting on the throne. I think it's really interesting that we get a shot of Imu turning back to face Rocks when the text box says "The man claimed to be a Davy Jones-esque pirate." Maybe Imu has always dealt with pirates trying to sack Marigeoisie but Rocks and Davy Jones set him off. scared

Harald beng set ablaze probably isn't a coincidence considering his devil like horns. Maybe the guards in the Holy Land thought that it was their only way to capture him? racist-lorry-driver

"Despite all efforts to save him, the admiral did not survive"

Artist rendition of Rocks vs an Admiral

cop xi-reactionary-spotted

Now it's official, all arc skippers (including those who skipped LRLL) will have to be exiled from the community and no longer allowed back in until they actually read the manga. gulag

It's interesting to see where Rocks got his rise vs. how Teach got his crew. I don't think is BB weaker than Rocks by a large margin (Teach was a candidate to be a Yonko commander partly by seniority) but Teach isn't just copying his ancestor's footsteps.

I still think the final war will be a Davy Back fight for the one piece, it's just too perfect. biaoqing-copium

Also buckingham stussy is gender doggirl-sweat

We get Wang Zhi reveal doug-clap and a godfather reference family-guy-death-pose

It is interesting that BB's goal is to be King of the World, It's really interesting to see a pre-Roger pre-One Piece world where that wasn't the goal of every pirate. I think Rocks' downfall is not truly understanding the history of the world and not going to Laugh Tale, he understands that there's something preventing him from taking over but he doesn't discover why till it's too late.

Maybe he was trying to create his own "One Piece" or the "treasure meant to connect all as one" when he says he wants to claim the whole world. doggirl-smart

Chapter ends with Rocks ready to clear out pirate australia, apparently this is the year where Kaido joins so we are nearing God Valley again but this time from the Rocks perspective.

Xebec is everything we'd think Roger would be from chapter 1. officer-down unlimited piracy on the holy land.

[-] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 5 points 5 days ago

Only 2 people did an direct assault on the slave owners, one was fisher tiger and now xebec. Of course there is rev army but this is it as far as direct resistance goes (excluding strawhats v WG).

But yeah roger is more of a romantic fella. He loves the piracy and found the suppressed info about ancient kingdom. But yeah he is more of anywhere the wind blows person than he is a leader.

[-] DeadWorld@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago

I look forward to the strawhat vs red har daveyback fight

OH GOD this chapter was good. Fucking peak egghead levels of good. Goda is BACK!

I'm not even mad theres a break because I need one after this chapter.

I have to let my thoughts stew for a moment and ill post my full reaction afterwards.

[-] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago

I'm shaking. This chapter was a damn joy to read. Holy shit. So much to digest.

[-] drinkinglakewater@hexbear.net 3 points 5 days ago

And we're still not done the flashback yet faded

Mihawk is too young to be Xebec's contemporary, thank god

[-] drinkinglakewater@hexbear.net 3 points 5 days ago

Interestingly Xebec seems like he does the same sword move as Roger and Shanks or at least a similar style, so maybe there's some sort of parallel?

[-] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 3 points 5 days ago

There seems to be yeah. Weird that their generation is mostly fellas like roger or rocks who don't got a devil fruit.

I would love to have some more lore that fills in more puzzle for me. I get that a good narrative leaves you with more questions than answers, but I feel sufficiently teased. Just fucking tell me that Gold Roger was no angel. Tell me that Xebec read the poneglyphs and one of them said that Imu was the Earth God and created devil fruits. Give me something, Oda!!

Piracy is good and you should do more of it. Use https://aniwave.to/ and https://4anime.gg/ for streaming, and https://nyaa.si/ for torrents. Piracy is the only means of digital protest that audiences have to fight poor worker treatment.
