I'm considering buying a robot vacuum cleaner, but I'm not a fan of the idea that it would scan my apartment and send data to the cloud.

I came across the Valetudo project, and it looks promising. It doesn’t replace the firmware - just replaces the cloud connection with local automation systems instead. Has anyone here used it? Or are you using something else for local control? I'd love to hear your experience 🙂

I draw the line at getting a vacuum with a camera. A lidar scanner and bumper does not bother me much. But you can use Valetudo.

Second Valetudo. I've used it for years now on a Dreame L10 Pro. Thinking about upgrading to something with mopping capabilities but Valetudo support is a requirement for me from now on!

I use Valetudo and it works great, zero complaints. Just get a model that is officially supported.

I put valetudo on my Roborock s8 and blocked its access to the internet at my router. Works perfectly and integrates well with home assistant.

I've heard of some people jailbreaking their roombas but it requires messing with the hardware iirc, but it didn't sound as hard as jailbreaking a smart TV.

When I last checked, it didn't seem difficult to flash my Dreametech L10s Ultra, but there was a step where if you didn't get it done within X seconds, you brick your vacuum. No idea if that's accurate, but didn't want to risk a $1000 vacuum on it, so I sadly still use it connected to cloud (because I want to use mapping functionality).

it's not hard, I've done it

@Shatur there is also a fork of Valetudo - Congatudo meant for Conga vacuums (Spain designed, China made)

Unfortunately it is way less maintained, though easier for hack, as you only change /etc/hosts on the Tina Linux flashed on Conga
