For example grey out the post title to show that the post had been opened at some point already.

Second this and to take it a step further, the ability to automatically hide read posts.

hiding read posts can already be enabled in the settings.

That setting has no effect for me.

Me neither. For me it only hides read posts from my home instance.

Piggybacking here rather than make a new thread, since it seems close enough: is there a way to hide individual posts that I'm just not seeing? I was gonna come request it.
