Good grief. Never seen him this dejected.

[-] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 6 points 4 months ago

I had hopes for him after the move to Ferrari. But it seems they were not to be. Ferrari are, and have been, a mid rank team for about twenty years. It was a step down for him.

I just hope that next year will be different. But who am I kidding. Eh?

Ferrari and Linux will dominate

[-] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 9 points 4 months ago

It's the year of the Ferrari desktop, I'm sure of it!

Complete with "we are checking" boot splash.

I'll caveat this with the fact that I do like lewis.

I think his quali pace is absolutely abysmal the past few years. But on Sundays he's been pretty impressive still, often ending up beating his teammate (Charles or George), which is definitely impressive for his age.

I think he's just lost his edge, and it's probably time to call it. But, always a chance new regulation play more into how he wants to drive a car, so I guess gamble on that as Ferrari

I'm convinced he's never recovered fully from catching COVID.

[-] hal_5700X@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

He ever recovered from the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He not been the same driver since.

[-] subOrange@lemmy.world 0 points 4 months ago

Yes, yes you are. Sorry folks but without his shiny silver arrow, he is just another driver.

[-] MangioneDontMiss@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago

he used to be better than this. and it wasn't just because he had a better car. he used to be a better driver.

~~Yup. There was a time when Ferrari was untouchable with objectively the best car. Hamilton (McLaren/Mercedes at the time) was the only one in the field who would regularly give Schumacher a run for his money. Everyone else was happy with third.~~

[-] bequ@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

What are you talking about? Schumacher retired from Ferrari in 2006, Hamilton came into F1 in 2007. And when Schumacher came back with Mercedes, he only had 1 Podium before retiring again.

My memory must be going. i confused him with Kimi raikkonen? I'm not even sure now lol.

[-] Microw@piefed.zip 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Yeah I think you're thinking of Raikkonen

[-] Tim_Bisley@piefed.social 2 points 4 months ago

This is F1 in a nutshell. The pool of drivers are all pretty good but they don't really matter. Its all about the engineering and money.

[-] MangioneDontMiss@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 months ago

when the other driver is consistently faster and even gets to pole position while you can't even get out of q2 or q3 (last weekend)... then its time to realize that isn't all about the machinery.

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 6 points 4 months ago

I don't disagree, but his teammate did put it on pole. The driver has some impact.

[-] MangioneDontMiss@lemmy.ca -2 points 4 months ago

I'm glad he finally realizes it. He needs to retire. It's painful watching him.

[-] woelkchen@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

If the figures of how much he makes as driver, brand ambassador, from various sponsorships, etc. are remotely true, he has 100 million reasons each year to cheer up.

[-] MangioneDontMiss@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago

yeah no kidding. probably one of the worst sports contracts in history. and the longer he keeps racing, the more he devalues his brand.

[-] woelkchen@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

the longer he keeps racing, the more he devalues his brand.

When Hamilton thinks about whether racing under his current 100 million Euro/year contract devalues his brand:

[-] MangioneDontMiss@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

my comment wasn't aimed at how hamilton feels about it. it was aimed at how ferrarri feels about throwing away those shit tons of money when they already had a better, more consistent driver in sainz.
