I hope more countries support this. Genocidal countries like Israel should not be invited to events.

Dunno. Netanyaho has been invited to The Hague, and I think that's a good thing

I hope more follow, those that don't will be on the wrong side of history

Spain being a guaranteed finalist and a large financial supporter of Eurovision gives this a lot of weight

At the end of the day, the only thing people truly care about is money. Losing a major donor is likely not an option for Eurovision

Wait guaranteed finalist? That's how that thing works? Like I've seen the clips of individual performances but I've never watched the whole thing, they have preset finalists?

[-] some_random_nick@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

From their website:
There shall be six guaranteed places therein, i.e. one for the producing organization, i.e. the Member which has won the preceding edition (the "Host Broadcaster"), and the five Members from France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom (the “Big 5”).

Really is a shit competition isn't it?

[-] knatschus@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 7 months ago

It's a great show and those who finance it have a spot in the main event.

If you think the competition part is very important you don't understand it.

He'll if you believe you can have competive music you don't understand art

Didn't expect the Netherlands

[-] BakerBagel@midwest.social 25 points 7 months ago

They were kicked out of the finals 2 years ago after a smear campaign from the Israeli broadcaster. They absolutely have an axe to grind

[-] dangrousperson@feddit.org 2 points 7 months ago

didn't know that either, makes sense

[-] ViaGetty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 months ago

Damn, Eurovision goes hard

[-] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 4 points 7 months ago

Its about the only way EU countries can "battle" each other without starting WW3

[-] lemming741@lemmy.world 14 points 7 months ago

The head of Slovenia’s national broadcaster has also said the country, a regular participant in Eurovision, would likely withdraw if Israel participates. Similar comments have been made by the head of Iceland’s national broadcaster.

[-] dangrousperson@feddit.org 8 points 7 months ago

Yes, but they haven't confirmed it, its only 'likely'.

The second paragraph says who the other two confirmations are: "The move follows similar statements last week by RTÉ and the Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS. "

RTÉ is the Irish Public Broadcaster.

So Ireland and the Netherlands

[-] Sasuke@hexbear.net 3 points 7 months ago

The Netherlands (sixth biggest financial contributor to ESC) and Slovenia

Byebye Moroccanoil. I'm not implying this is the reason Israel remained in Eurovision. But watch Moroccanoil drop Eurovision if Israel gets removed.
