Our plan to stop people working illegally, is to require them to provide ID to their employer and if they don't they're breaking the law!

Absolute idiocy.

It's worse than that.

You have to run a government app on your phone. The tracking device in your pocket that goes with you everywhere, that must run government code.

I trust an app made by the British government than anyone else. Hopefully they don't subcontract it out. The British government has been known for making some things FOSS, like gov.uk

I'd rather if they made it some form of open file format. So people can make third party apps for it.

Of course they won't make it in house, they'll contract some company to do it as cheap as possible, and it will run like hot garbage and probably have a tone of bugs and security vulnerabilities.

Remember the track and trace app they spent £10 Billion on?

You already had to do that. Birth ceet passport etc

[-] Denjin@feddit.uk 14 points 4 months ago

That's sort of my point, this doesn't solve a problem that isn't already solved.

[-] TWeaK@lemmy.today 3 points 4 months ago

Yes, but you have those as physical objects. This is an app you must run on your phone.

I look forward to not installing it on my non Android/apple phone

Better get a burner phone or something that sandboxes, brits.

This won’t stop immigrant employment. It just means they’ll be paid in cash under the table.

Will UK be requiring an ID to get medical care? That might make a dent there, but it’s a mixed bag because people who don’t get care spread illness. Especially bad during pandemics.

If only we already had physical identification that proves we have the right to work. We could call it a pass-document! Then we don't need to tie it to your phone which is much more likely to be stolen. /S

FFS. I've been trying to avoid engaging with politics on lemmy but every time I learn about something good Labour's done (renter's rights, recycling changes) they announce something stupid to compensate (mandatory age verification (edit: I meant that they won't budge on it, the Tories introduced it), this and whatever the hell "AI" nonsense they're doing).

I'm just so tired, man.

If only we already had physical identification that proves we have the right to work I donno why we don't make the N.I card have a photo on it. I thought that would be quite handy.

Were they ever asked how this would have any effect on illegal immigration?

[-] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 months ago

Do you think they give a shit?

[-] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 3 points 4 months ago

There will be no requirement for individuals to carry their ID or be asked to produce it

Sounds like it's just an internet account?
