For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Yuyu Hakusho (1992), one of the all-time classics of shonen anime, featuring a teenage boy who is killed by a car to save a child and then given superpowers in recognition of his selflessness. He goes back to Earth and fights bad guys. Expect a lot of glowing and powering up to defeat smug villains and the like. Episodes 19 through 24 tonight.
After that is A Whisker Away (2020), an anime feature about a teenage girl who discovers a magic mask that allows her to transform into a cat. She uses It to pursue her crush, who has yet to notice her, and to whom she is too shy to talk. Uh-oh, overusing the mask risks trapping her in cat form permanently. How will she resolve this conundrum? Guess we’ll find out. Directors Tomotaka Shibayama and Junichi Sato have both worked on a bunch of anime series, most notably Your Lie in April (2014) for the former and Princess Tutu (2002) for the latter, though neither have done much else in feature films. This movie is popular on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.
We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
