If that x86 emulation works okay, that's another nail in Intel's coffin.

I think it may be this: https://github.com/FEX-Emu/FEX

So you might already be able learn more about it and how well it works.

It works great on my m1 mac with asahi. I'd say it's already pretty mature.

Someone from Valve mention FEX in the Gamer's Nexus video, so that must be it. Also Digital Foundry quoted someone from Valve as saying that "it's the start of SteamOS for ARM, and they were excited to bring PC content to ARM devices in the gaming world."

Somewhere in one of these videos they said that the emulation has about 20% CPU overhead, but I can't find that exact quote right now.

So that sounds pretty promising I'd say.

my guess would be box86 but who knows.

No yours looks better suited for games.

[-] stevatoo@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

No price is always a great sign, lol

[-] daniyeg@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

it's an early announcement because they want to get out the devkits early so no price yet. there's been a lot of fluctuations in price in the hardware space and i suspect the specs of these devices will change based on availability as well.

the only thing we know about the price is that the steam frame will be the same price or below the index, so an upper bound of 1000$. as for the steam machine they said they try to target the entry level price for a gaming pc, and it won't be priced like a console. my guess would be that it will be priced around 1000$ dollar as well. probably something like 949$ for the 512GB model and 1099$ for the 2TB model.

With the ever-changing laundry list of tariffs they probably don't want to have to change it after announcing it

[-] ComradeOohAah@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm guessing it's gonna be about $2000, I'd very surprised if it's less than $1500. For context, Samsung released the Galaxy XR last month which is going for about $1800, the Play For Dream MR is about $2000.

glad they're doing new things but I went all in on a new PC about a year ago and got a used quest 3 for half price on ebay like 8 months ago.

not for me but im glad they're doing new things with all that CS skin money

[-] ComradeOohAah@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Exciting. As a dev, I wish the Frame had face tracking, but eye tracking is a step forward. Now how to afford one.

[-] Blep@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

That controller looks kind of uncomfortable.

[-] GoebbelsDeezNuts@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

ive needed a new computer for a looooong time, ive also been looking for an excuse to ditch windows. if this thing is cheap enough im just gonna say fuck it and buy one

[-] The_Grinch@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I would be shocked if you couldn't plug it into a dock and use it as a desktop computer too, with keyboard and mouse and monitor. I assume it's going to be just a computer like the steam deck.
