Well actually, 6 x 7 is the question. At least in one of the later HGTG books when they rebuild earth it's alluded to that this was the question all along.
No, the question is 6 * 9. The implication is that something is fundamentally wrong with the universe since that doesn't add up.
Of course it doesn't. It's a multiplication.
Shh! Every time the question and answer is known at the same time, the universe is replaced by an even more baffling one!

In maths, writing "a b" is the same as "a * b". Following that logic, writing "6 7" (instead of "67") would also be equivalent to "6 * 7".
I haven't heard the song that was the origin of 6 7, but afaik they say it as "six seven", not "sixty-seven".
