1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?

https://quokk.au/u/Deceptichum

2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?

74 year community ban for 'homophobia'

3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).

4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).

here's the exchange that resulted in the ban:

5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

I'm gay, trans, and an anarchist. I thought the post title was misogynistic, objectifying, and not a good example something that should be in a 'queer friendly' space.

Not everyone is okay with sexual degradation humor, misogynistic comments, etc, even if it's about people you disagree with. Pointing that out in this case got me called a homophobic tankie and banned within minutes of making the post.

Ok y'all need to stop with the rage bait comments or I'm locking the thread. Discuss the mod actions only please

[-] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 43 points 1 week ago

PTB.

Entirely unsurprising for that mod in particular, they've equated communists to Nazis and said "tankie fucks deserve to get their heads bashed in." Extremely aggressive 100% of the time whenever they encounter a Marxist, or even like in the OP an anarchist that happens to disagree with them.

[-] calliope@retrolemmy.com 8 points 1 week ago

I would argue it’s because you’re on lemmy.ml, and people who are obsessed with stuff like this think it really means something instead of being one of the more popular instances.

[-] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 week ago

I'm a Marxist-Leninist, I say that openly. The target of the OP calls us "authies" and "tankies," and seems to have an on-site hostility mindset when it comes to Marxists.

PTB That mod needs a chill pill holyy

[-] lib1@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago

PTB 100%. It’s not hard to see the association between being anti-misogyny and being pro-queer. It’s not conflating the two as being the same thing. Mod reasoning seems intentionally dishonest

[-] davel@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 week ago

I mean, the guy is very vocal about virulently hating “tankies” and has horseshoe theory brain worms, which means that you’re a (“red”) fascist, which gives him license to boot you for just existing.

I think your comment is pearl clutching and not homophobic (both you and the mod), but I also don’t think it warranted removal.

[-] Diva@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago

fwiw I wasn't saying the mod was homophobic based on that comment.

I just thought that it was unnecessarily sexually degrading and misogynistic, thus not a good fit in a 'queer friendly' space

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

I don’t see how it’s misogynistic. Definitely sexually crude, but there’s nothing gendered about the insult, as compared to words like cunt or dickhead. Both men and women can use cumrags (or be used as one).

Wondering if this was a spin on the word comrade being close to cumrag as well.

[-] Diva@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

my reading is that misogyny isn’t just about whether the target is female, and obviously on a surface read anyone can be a cumrag, or use one.

the use as an insult still relies on demeaning traits that our culture associates with women or femininity. gay men can still have internalized misogyny

Even though "cumrag" can apply across all genders, the primary meaning has been "a thing used to wipe up semen," and "a person treated like a used-up sexual object."

the people getting framed as:

  • passive

  • used

  • disposable

  • interchangeable

  • something sex "happens" to

are women, femmes, and bottoms coded as feminine.

I can feel empowered by describing myself as a slut, cumrag, whatever, and use the term affectionately for others. however using those as insults on anyone I disagree with is still reproducing misogyny

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I don’t necessarily agree but I appreciate it nonetheless

[-] Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago

I guess I've led a sheltered life, because the first definition is the only one I thought of initially. But since you've pointed it out I get the issue with it now. I was equating it in my head with something more like "asswipe" initially. But even without the misogyny aspect, the ban was still PTB.

[-] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago

In a similar vein, describing one person submitting or otherwise going along with what another wills as "dickriding" or other similar sexual act is also baked in misogyny and homophobia. The cultural shame levied against gay men, women in general, etc. is why it's supposed to hurt to be called a dickrider for someone, rather than just a sycophant. Both are pejoratives, one relies on that cultural shame.

What is misogynistic about the term cumrag and what do queer people have to do with that?

Still, the ban is a bit much.

PTB / BPR.

[-] Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 week ago

I personally don't see the misogyny either. But maybe that's just because I need it explained to me? At this point it seems like PTB, because the mod went from zero to permaban with no discussion over the point Diva was making.

I feel like the mod was looking for an excuse here. I am not sure this is misogynistic per se, but definitely using a slur for "bottoms" (of any gender) to malign your ideological enemies is problematic and probably reinforcing patriarchy and toxic masculinity.

On the other hand people in here going all "of course I'm not surprised they're sexist, since they're anti-ML" is some weak kick-them-during-the-pile-on shit given how there's hordes of patriarchy-lovingly homophobic Marxists (in fact I'd argue that's most of them, comparatively)

[-] Diva@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 week ago

hordes of patriarchy-lovingly homophobic Marxists

sadly I am familiar with the trope, mostly from other spaces than here though. plenty of 'old guard' Marxist parties irl do suck in that exact way for example.

that is why I don't have much tolerance for 'patriots' of any affiliation and call shit out when I see it.

[-] hakase@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

Lol, I love a good pearl clutch-off. ESH, but more PTB due to the ban.

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.
