The documentary on it with that name was good! Closed for Storm

Almost looks like AI art

I remember seeing this place shut down back in 2007 when some friends and I visited New Orleans. It's crazy to me that a company as large as Six Flags hasn't done anything with this property in nearly 2 decades.

It's too likely to be destroyed by weather again.

You'd think they could salvage some of the rides for other parks, if not only for parts.

[-] BaronVonBort@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

They did, one of the roller coasters was relocated to San Antonio. But most of the stuff that was there was unrecoverable.

[-] sangriaferret@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

They don't own it anymore. It's changed hands a few times but no one wants to make any investment into developing there. It's too much work and the risks are to great.

I thought that some company got the bid to redevelop it?

[-] sangriaferret@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

I knew it was up for sale but I didn't know somebody had bought it.

I looked up what they had planned for the development and it's absolutely insane. I'll be shocked if this ever really gets off the ground especially for the budget and timeline they've given.

Plus, they're asking for $100 mil in government funds. If you know anything about New Orleans politics be this will definitely end up in someone's pockets. This whole thing reeks of grift. Hopefully I'm wrong because that area definitely needs help in turning around.

Vice had a cool documentary on this a while back. https://youtu.be/ycLDz_GidbM?si=HewWDCk6QcO2vtBx

They used to have that exact coaster at Knott's Berry Farm back in the day, Boomerang.

Edit: turns out that exact coaster ended up at a park in Indonesia

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 1 points 11 months ago

That style of coaster is quite popular. Canada's Wonderland has one that they call the bat.

[-] w2tpmf@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

They still have the Boomerang at Knott's last time I was there.

[-] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Apparently they ripped it out in 2017. Same ride as in OPs picture?

[-] w2tpmf@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I guess it's been about a decade since I was there. Lol

[-] EclecticDad@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I have been on this coaster at atleast 3 different parks. It is a gravity drop/backwards coaster.

[-] athos77@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

It's designed by Arrow Dynamics. One of the first models (maybe entirely the first) was installed at Six Flags Great Adventure. At the time, the total cost was about $15 million, half spent on the ride itself, the rest on the footings and infrastructure.

[-] EclecticDad@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I've seen it at Carowinds, Darian Lake and Great Adventure. I think I saw it at King's Dominion and Six Flags Georgia, but not 100% sure.

[-] athos77@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I checked and it was at Six Flags Over Georgia. Their Shockwave was the first one of these ever opened, in 1988. Great Adventure's was originally scheduled for the same year, but they had some construction delays (the park is on really sandy soil) and theirs opened in 1989.

I remember visiting another amusement park (though I've no idea which one) which had this same coaster design, except the bottom of the first hill took you through an underwater tunnel - that was fun :)

[-] EclecticDad@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That seems very cool. Was it a SeaWorld or something?

[-] athos77@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I just checked - it was Anaconda at King's Dominion. And when I was first looking, I thought it might be Intimidator 305 at the same park, except that's by Intamin. But boy did Intamin sure copy some of Arrow's features, lol !!

This picture could be the background for a movie poster about a haunted theme park.

[-] JewGoblin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Ben Shapiro can finally get on the adult rides, yay
