Old saw restoration: how much bending & pitting is too much?

Pretty personal problem i guess. Not sure any kinks would be acceptable for a cut with any close tolerance. Rough cutting would probably be fine. Working on the 'good' portion would avoid the issues. Would cutting the blade shorter and cleaning the edge make sense, reducing the effective length?
How do they cut? I'd personally start with filing and setting the teeth and straightening, then if they work worry about getting them looking nice.
