While I liked the show overall, the season 1 plot should've been covered in like 4 episodes max.

It's not the 'slow burn' that Breaking bad and Better Call Saul had. They had a lot more going and had far more interesting characters. I will defend Season 1 of BCS to hell because I like the characters in the show and it's fun seeing them doing relatively normal stuff.

In pluribus, Carol is a dumbass. The hivemind is not interesting at all and the rest of the survivors are props. Manousos is the only sane character in the show and I can get behind my man but he had way fewer scenes.

The plot just goes around in circles until the season just ends with nothing happening. The next season is also like 2 years away at least so the hype will go down because unlike Severance, this is dogshit.

I don't know how vince will make 4 seasons of this slop. Unless they somehow multiply the survivor count by like a thousand it will remain mostly boring.

On the positive note, the actors are amazing. Rhea Seehorn is great and I love how different Carol is from Kim Wexler that I don't even notice it.

I'm pretty disappointed with the show. I heard SO much hype about it over the past couple months so I was really excited to start watching it just before the last episode was available so my partner and I could watch it 1 episode per night just like we always do.

The first episode was awesome and we were so excited to get into another good show. Then the good times just dropped off a cliff. The 2nd episode was one of those.. okay, so they're trying to lay out how this all works.. very slowly... and then by the 3rd episode my partner was already complaining the show was boring and nothing was happening.

We finished it last night and were just gobstruck at how people think this show is even remotely good. That was possibly one of the most boring shows I've ever watched a whole season of. Not only that but the main character is so fucking dislikable it was aggravating to watch on top of being boring.

I like that Carol is a “dumbass”. I enjoy shows where the protagonists have no coherent worldview and are completely incompetent when it comes to achieving their goals because that’s almost everyone in real life as well.

Season 6 of the Sopranos was my favorite for similar reasons, another show that can be seen as boring for periods of time, twin peaks another example (Fuck you David Lynch I know you took pleasure in stretching out the Dougie storyline for as long as possible)

Has the original sci-fi potential of the show gone off a cliff? Definitely! If anyone has any recommendations for sci-fi shows that actually deliver though I’d be interested. I tried the expanse but the dialogue was insufferable and the quality nosedived after season 1.

Watch Severance or Silo. Both are pretty good imo.

Fallout is also airing rn and is great.

Pluribus is one of the few recent shows thats not boring to me. Theres a sense of purpose and intent in every scene.

[-] grym@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago

Eh I like it. It's very slow paced on purpose it seems, and I enjoy that.

Idk I really like it so to each their own I guess. I really like sci fi and it's a totally unique concept

S2 I'm guessing they get zosia to break free. It'll be a much more compelling story when people have agency to go both ways.

I'm not super invested in the story but will def pick it back up when it comes out.

Relatedly what the heck happened to TV? Like we used to be able to get a season a year and now we have to wait 2-3 chomsky-yes-honey

It'll be a much more compelling story when people have agency to go both ways.

kinda want carol and manousos to disconnect a bunch of people and they're all like "nah fuck this i wanna go back in"

[-] sexywheat@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

The new Fallout show is aiming for one season per year, and specifically referenced how shit it is that people have to wait so long for new content lately.

Relatedly what the heck happened to TV?

if i had to guess, complications associated with all of these things happened in the last 5 years

  • covid
  • sag-aftra collective action
  • writers' guild collective action

plus the weird contract encumbrances associated with intellectual property agreements around all of these ownership shakeups:

  • at&t purchase, spinoff / divestiture of warner media into discovery which mutated HBO
  • viacom & CBS merger into paramount
  • disney bought 21st century fox
  • comcast bought sky
  • amazon bought MGM
  • FX/hulu just got bought by disney

scripted, episodic TV coming out on a yearly tempo seems to have been the primary casualty of late. the genre of media production that doesn't seem to have suffered at all, and has mostly exploded in content, is fucking reality dog shit and true crime slop, which are both dirt cheap for production and negligible risk compared to a multi-season show with complex set pieces, episodic story arcs, and elaborate/exotic settings.

the gems have been few and far between because i think talented showrunners have figure out where they can shop their ideas without getting pushed by the suits into pandering to an algorithm.

People will have to break free to make the show more interesting. Zosia breaking free could be really interesting, because then the character that Carol somehow had an intimate bond with will not even remember her, not even able to speak English.

[-] Blep@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago

Why wouldnt she remember being part of the entity? She,d be herself again, but even while part of the entity she has memories from before.

[-] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago

That's a good point, I guess we don't know how memories are handled. Like, if someone comes out will they have every memory still, even mundane stuff like the location of every bag of doritos. I was just under the assumption they would come out with amnesia, but that's maybe not the case. I guess we will see

[-] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

It's more fun to talk about than watch.

Which is why I keep watching it, so I can talk about it.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I agree, "prestige" television loves its time wasting lingering shots to draw out slow moving plots while the director gets to masturbate over being so artistic. It's the same as aura farming filler shots from dragon ball z

It really was a whole season of waiting for something to happen and then oh nothing ever did

And manousos being the only one not fucking the thing sucks because he's got libertarian brain worms if he's witnessed the collapse of every social contract and his response is to eat rotting dog food and, when forced to take things, leave fucking money for them

They should have just had more people "free" from it to begin with honestly, then you could have like, factions forming as people figure out different ways they want to deal with The Entity, maybe even some wanting to use violence to coerce others into joining (like a paramilitary to get around its nonviolence), or at least otherwise bring in some more interesting people because jesus fucking christ the people who "survived" are either boring nobodies or idiots (what the fuck is wrong with Laxmi btw, is she written the way she is to be a misogyny lightning rod or something?). And since there's only like, what, half a dozen left to be introduced? i hope one of them is fucking Atlas for all the carrying of this show they're gonna have to do

I enjoyed the start of it but yeah, by the end it was going a bit to slow. Definitely didn't hook me in the way BB did.

I haven't seen BCS but I think it's time I finally burn through that one because I've heard it is great

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

my partner and I kept comparing pluribus with bb and bcs for obvious reasons and both of those shows are just SO much better than this turd

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

there's a billion more episodes of those shows and they have complete arcs for most of the the characters. of course the first half of a season of a show (9 episodes isn't a season, fight me) that does minimal worldbuilding and doesn't resolve anything isn't as good.

[-] mendiCAN@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

yeah watch bcs. i like it even better than bb.

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago

Bcs is awesome, better than bb imo

[-] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

My cousin recommended I watch the show in a conversation and I pretended not to have already watched it or even know about it because i couldn't be fucked talking about it

[-] 42beansinapod@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

I really liked it. I can't quite say why, other than that the visual style and music combo is nice.
