I know things were pretty fucked - I haven't been a lifelong cynic for no reason - but still, it's amazing how quickly snd completely the US has descended into screeching insanity.

And all at the hands of this demented lunatic, his psychopathic enablers and his legions of angry and stupid followers.

What a world....

[-] bagsy@lemmy.world 68 points 2 months ago

And all of it because billionaires want to fuck children and not pay taxes.

That's the most astonishing part of it to me.

Reality has gone completely off the rails. Virtually every day, I read another account of blithering insanity, and painfully obviously dangerous and destructive insanity, from this administration, and then I watch as all of the official entities that are meant to check that sort of insanity just treat it as another day and another press release from another President's office.

It's like The Emperor's New Clothes, only far far worse.

And all in less than a year...

It's unclear if Nigeria asked the US for help but they seem to be accepting it.

https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/us-launches-strikes-against-islamic-state-militants-northwest-nigeria-trump-says-2025-12-25/

Nigeria's government has said armed groups target both Muslims and Christians, and U.S. claims that Christians face persecution do not represent the complex security situation and ignore efforts to safeguard religious freedom. But it has agreed to work with the U.S. to bolster its forces against militant groups.

[-] WatDabney@sopuli.xyz 16 points 2 months ago

At this point though, that's just noise.

Unfortunately, the mass media is complicit in the insanity - they've abandoned principles, integrity, honesty and accuracy in pursuit of profit and/or the owners' agenda, whichever might be deemed more important in a given organization.

That's not to say that that story is necessarily false. It's simply that if it's a spin that serves someone's agenda, as this obviously is, then it will be published somewhere, entirely regardless of whether it's true or not, so the fact that it has been published means nothing at all.

[-] yeahiknow3@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 months ago

Mainstream media is just billionaire media.

[-] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 months ago

And the government is just billionaire government.

Sorry for being picky, just wanted to point out this bit of redundancy:

in pursuit of profit and/or the owners' agenda

That agenda ultimately is and always will be profit for any company even a hundredth of that size, let alone a straight up monopoly.

Other than that, no notes 10/10

World police again!? Didn't our diddler and chief explicitly say he was against this. What a moron.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 12 points 2 months ago

The real morons are the people who voted for him thinking he's the anti-war candidate.

U.S. military's Africa Command confirmed it had conducted a strike that killed multiple militants at the request of Nigerian authorities.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 17 points 2 months ago

It's a little unclear if Nigeria asked for it but they seem to be going along with it.

So, that's the thing, right? We're so used to everything this administration does being Absolutely horrible. Rightly so.

But they took out Islamic State(TM)? That would be a win for humanity. . .but is it true? Sheesh, that's the hard part. Who's to say? It's always more complicated than a single headline or news article can contain.

We're almost entirely in a post-truth society at this point.

[-] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Sometimes the why can be just as important as the action.

Did this happen because Donald Trump wanted to do a good thing that would benefit someone that isn't him? Probably not.

Did this happen because headlines are flying around that Donald Trump is a child rapist/baby murderer and any distraction is a good distraction? I'd say the timing is pretty fucking on point for a new conflict or a newly publicized conflict.

I feel like this is something that could have possibly been the right the to do, but I am more than certain that it wasn't intended to be.

Who's to say?

Who knows man

[-] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 34 points 2 months ago

From the article:

"In November, CNN reported that the president’s initial threat against Nigeria came after he watched a Fox News segment about violence in the country."

[-] aramis87@fedia.io 16 points 2 months ago

So the solution is to introduce more violence?

[-] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 2 months ago

For the US, generally, the answer is "yes."

tRump is trying to play to his base. He doesn't care that Christians are committing the same atrocities as ISIS.

He also needs to try to distract everyone from the Epstein files.

[-] Luminous5481@anarchist.nexus 17 points 2 months ago

wild that the only reason he knows or cares about the violence in Nigeria is because he saw something about it on Fox News.

[-] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

"I really deserve a peace prize" > bombs people for Christmas

[-] Rooty@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

Oh, so this is what the rhetoric of " they're persecuting Christians in Nigeria" was leading up to.

[-] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 months ago

[-] dan1101@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

Cruel idiot can't even take a break on Christmas.

[-] 52fighters@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 months ago

It was ISIS and Nigeria asked him to do it.

[-] jacksilver@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

If you read the articles on this it sounds more like the US told Nigeria it was going to bomb people and to just deal with it. Even Nigerias response to the bombing does not strongly indicate they requested the US to act.

Edit: Fixed spelling.
