Really disappointed. Walz and his family have been subject of an ugly, horrible, and xenophobic smear campaign and he's a good strong leader that I really admire. I hope that this isn't the end of his career in politics.

[-] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 4 weeks ago

I agree that it’s unfortunate he’s not running, but smear campaign? Unless I missed something, I thought there was no dispute that a massive crime was being committed on his watch. In my opinion, it’s pretty negligent to not even check if there are kids in the childcare facilities that are getting funding. One inspection at funding renewal time would have been doable.

Unless I missed something.

No dispute that a massive crime was being committed on his watch

You did miss something, and it is up for dispute.

Check this out.

[-] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 weeks ago

How much do you want to bet that tightening licenses for childcare providers is a nonstarter for republicans because it would mean shutting down virtually all church-based childcare centers?

[-] thallamabond@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

If they were going to reform it in any way would be more like this.

"You know having this assistance for only poor people is actually discrimination, we must offer this money to all people who have to pay for child care regardless of income"

If you want proof of this, take a look at North Carolina School voucher system, Republicans remove the income cap so now no matter how much you make if your kid is in private school you can get a voucher.

[-] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 weeks ago

The first part I’m not against, means-testing benefit programs makes them more susceptible to being destroyed through small cuts here and there because not everyone benefits in the first place. If democrats actually wanted to win, they could respond with “we shouldn’t discriminate, let’s make the benefit universal, you just need to use a childcare center who accepts our rate.”

[-] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 4 weeks ago

I’m glad to see that it wasn’t as severe as originally reported.

[-] edible_funk@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

If by not as severe you mean almost totally made up then yeah. Fucking republicans.

[-] mrmaplebar@fedia.io 2 points 4 weeks ago

Is there actually any evidence of a "massive crime being committed" other than a right-wing youtube video?

The department had not confirmed Shirley's allegations of fraud at the time of this writing, nor could Snopes independently verify the figures his report used. Snopes also could not independently verify Shirley's claims that the daycares committing fraud were run or owned by Somali Americans. https://www.snopes.com/news/2025/12/30/nick-shirley-minnesota-daycare-fraud/

And, even starting on the assumption that this fraud was happening, why on Earth would that be Tim Walz fault? Is anyone claiming that he was in on it somehow? Was he running a fraudulent daycare? Or are gonna pretend like he's to blame for something happening "on his watch" as if he's some kind of omniscient deity?

It's not the Governors job to prosecute crimes, let alone somehow prevent them from happening in the first place.

If a massive fraud was being committed, it would be up to the Minnesota or US AG to prosecute based on available evidence.

[-] ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com 10 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Hours earlier, there were rumblings that Walz was considering dropping out. Minnesota political analyst Blois Olson claimed the governor was likely to make the decision, adding that Walz recently met with Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D).

As noted in the Axios report, Walz’s administration has come under increased scrutiny due to the welfare scandal plaguing his state. The governor has argued that he has been working to root out fraud, but that hasn’t stopped Republicans — both in his state and across the country — for pouncing on the situation.

I'm assuming Klobuchar helped convince him to drop out. Traditional democrats fold at the slightest fight, but it's a shame that Walz is giving in. Republicans will always be manufacturing some crisis solely so they can exploit it, the only answer is to fight back. Every time you give into terrorists, you're just supporting terrorism.

But unfortunately Walz seems to not have good instincts when the sabotage is coming from inside the house. At the peak of Kamala's campaign when he was knocking it out of the park with "weird" and connecting with voters, Kamala's "we're going with Cheney" team apparently convinced him to dial it down to not alienate the mythical "centrists" that are just republicans in trenchcoats. I expect this move to turn out similarly to how that one turned out.

Your country is so fucking disappointing. my god...

I'm sorry. I sincerely hope things turn around somehow. Citizens United broke everything. I hope that can be fixed.

It can! People have done it in the past and we will do it too!

One "scandal" and he ~~resigns~~ drops out. Reminds me of Al Franken. The best ones with actual principles fall on the sword. I'm not super opposed so long as the replacement Democrat candidate still wins I guess. But whoever that is will likely be further right which sucks.

[-] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 4 weeks ago

It's not even a scandal. Just idiots wanting to punish people based on their own racism

[-] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Not resigning, pulling out of the race. He's still governor and will continue to be so.

[-] dditty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 weeks ago

Thanks for the clarification! That's what I meant but I chose the wrong word.

[-] 4grams@awful.systems 6 points 4 weeks ago

I’ve met Walz a few times, I think he’s a pretty decent person. So of course he has no home in politics. Only evil, unscrupulous people survive in politics these days.

Our government is illegitimate, it desperately needs to just collapse.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 weeks ago

That's the problem

Decent people won't survive long in US politics, even though it so desperately needs them

We can only hope that the unavoidable incompetence collapse is soon

[-] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

I honestly think he dropped the ball on this fraud story. I’m still piecing together all the facts but the minute this story broke he should have been all over it.

A lot of the misinformation is coming from people that don’t even live in the state and he could have used this as an opportunity to make the job market a little better for his constituents by actually going after some of the fraud that IS happening and making statements about it.

A lot of the stuff I’m seeing I don’t even know if it’s true or not but it looks REALLY bad on Minnesota.

[-] doingthestuff@lemy.lol -2 points 4 weeks ago

I mean, I understand that it was his office that implemented the program. There are video clips from when he was running for vice president where he's bragging on the program and saying it could be implemented across the whole US. I'm not saying he was in on the fraud, but I don't know how easily he really could have gotten around being the fall guy here. He owned it, he had to go down.

[-] Soulg@ani.social 1 points 4 weeks ago

Did he? By the time the fraud became national news it was already dismantled and most of the people involved were already prosecuted. He just rolled over and let trump make shit up with little pushback.

[-] taiyang@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Thinking about it, it's probably not a terrible move on his part, overall. Dems can probably retain the governorship and this frees him to do other things. His replacement is probably worse, but it's not like he's retiring (although with how awful people are to him and his family, taking a break might be a good personal move... he has compassion and the attacks on his family probably really hurt).

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago
[-] taiyang@lemmy.world -1 points 4 weeks ago

That's a bummer to bring up. Except he admitted to what he did (which by 2025 standards is super benign) and felt shame over it. I don't get the same sense here. What did Franken end up doing anyway? Podcasting?

[-] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

That’s a bummer to bring up. Except he admitted to what he did (which by 2025 standards is super benign)

It was fucking benign back then too. Democrats just have no will to fight, and would rather SaVe ThE dIgNiTy Of ThE pArTy and resign instead of actually pushing back against republican smear campaigns.

I hate that they are our best option.

[-] lolo@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

FUCK AMY KLOBUCHAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! JESUS CHRIST I tucking hate that fucking woman. First Tina Smith and now WALZ?!?! Does their moral clarity upset this fucking nepobaby so much that she needs them GONE? Her two biggest agendas are making sure every Palestinian on Earth is myrdered and bird law. Why why why the fuck do people on this state listen to this fucking ghoul?? She has the political instincts of a fucking washcloth. I was at his launch rally and almost booed when she went up to speak. She probably couldn’t fucking wait to sabotage that progressive shit as soon as she could, without putting nothing across her own fucking chest of fucking course. FUCK AMY KLOBUCHAR!!!!

Spelling, Jesus Christ I am so pissed I can’t even type

[-] crusa187@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 weeks ago

Klobuchar is such a clown, exact wrong type of politician for this moment. Milquetoast democrats like her will serve the country up to Trump 3 on a silver platter.

[-] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 weeks ago

It has been claimed that the scene from Veep (great TV show, by the way) where one of the aides describe how they were shaving the VPs legs under the desk for her was inspired by an actual rumor surrounding Amy Klobuchar

[-] FE80@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

The Democratic party is useless.

[-] frog_brawler@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

I mean, what more can one elected official do to convince the Democratic Party that he embodies the figurative representation of a vagina?

[-] ynthrepic@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

So, what now? Is there a socialist candidate the left can vote for instead?

[-] optissima@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago
[-] ynthrepic@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

No, but what I want is for the Memdani momentum to continue.

[-] optissima@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Same, join your local DSA to find good future candidates!

[-] ynthrepic@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Would love to, unfortunately, I'm a citizen of the globe, not the US. I wish you the best of luck!

[-] dcpDarkMatter@kbin.earth 1 points 4 weeks ago

No, pretty standard DFL member. Which, as the name implies, is more labor-focused than the national Democratic party. But still not a socialist.

[-] justaman123@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

This makes me so sad, but he did fight for a long time. He was a great fighter for the people but there are others who can take up the fight. Roll with the punches

[-] myfunnyaccountname@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 weeks ago

And yet. The US still has a convicted felon and pedophile as president.

[-] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Rapist, grifter, bankrupt, etc
