If you want an unpopular opinion: ban car exhaust in all public spaces. Watch people go from "second hand smoke kills!" to "are you fucking crazy?".
It’s inevitable. US may be the last holdouts of buggy whip manufacturers but it really seems like a lot of the world is entering the steep part of the transition curve.
But most cars aren’t that bad of smell anymore. After a couple years driving an EV, it’s the noise of legacy cars that annoys me more. The thing is the most annoying car noises are probably from people who think buzzing and grinding sounds cool but have clearly never heard a true muscle car.
As an ex-smoker who hates the smell of cigarettes probably more than non-smokers ever will, I don't disagree in theory. But we shouldn't stop with just assaults to one sensory perception. In for a penny in for a pound as they say.
Loud-ass exhausts, booming subwoofers, and other assaults on the ears should also be banned in public. Strong colognes and perfumes...also banned in public.
Ugly sweaters, poor fashion choices, and shitty cars with anime girls painted on the side? You guessed it: They're assaults on the eyes and should be banned in public
Or we could just deal with the fact that other people like things we don't like.
Those things are not no the same level as smoking.
They're the same in that they bring some people joy while being offensive to others.
The effects of second hand smoke is not just offensive.
And a blanket ban of smoking outdoors, like OP suggests, would still not be a reasonable response.
Although I don't smoke cigarettes, I do vape weed in public when walking my dog in the forest. That hurts absolutely no one other than me. Just ban smoking near others ( which is exactly how it works for weed in my country, and should be how it works for cigarettes as well )
I don't see how me being forced to vape in my apartment and make my entire apartment and all my clothes smell like weed would help anyone
As long as you don’t litter your empty vapes. One of the many problems with cigarettes is the litter. Filters by the millions that never biodegrade
Yes, end with "protect the children!".
I've heard that smoking anything is actually just fentanyl and socialism combined into terrorism.
Then everyone needs to support those who smoke not being allowed to be told they can't smoke in their home. Fucking landlord parasites and their bullshit overreach into what someone is allowed to do where they live.
As someone who grew up with 3 smokers until I moved out on my own I had no idea how bad I smelled to the people around me. It gets in EVERYTHING and the worst part is when you grow up in it you have NO IDEA until you get away from it long enough for your sense of smell to notice it. I was shocked. It took about 6 months.
Was playing MTG with my brothers one day and couldn't figure out why my eyes were red and what the smell was.... Then all the comments from people my whole life hit life came back and ran through my head. I was amazed then so so so fucking angry at the adults that raised me for it.
I do smoke marijuana since it was legalized here but after my upbringing I'm very self aware of my vice's problems and make sure I'm not a nuisance.
But I will contend that I hate the smell of tobacco as much or more than ex amokers
So where would smokers go? They can't smoke indoors except for their own home - what about work? Are they allowed to go to events or concerts? Can they eat at restaurants? Where can they smoke?
Go talk to a grandma who can't quit. Tell her she can't go to a park. Or outdoors anywhere there is the possibility of no people. "Go be alone Nana, no one wants you near them."
Suppose you just want to pick in a minority and this one is socially acceptable. You're making sweeping statements about a type of person who may be trying to escape but are tied by addicted. It's not racism but the underpinnings of bullying are there. Let smokers have some place they can relax or else you will make militant smokers who feel the pressure of everyone around them but unable to do anything about it.
Stop finding new types of people to piss off with unwarranted subjugation.
I think it pretty much is?
Unless this is one of those "America is Default" posts 💁♂️
Strange comment. I don’t know of a single country that outright bans smoking in all public spaces. America or otherwise.
I don't think this is that unpopular, other than with smokers/ vapers. In the UK smoking is already banned everywhere indoors at least.
I think they want outdoors as well. Though that is assuming based mostly on how normal indoor smoking being banned already is.
Yes. Restaurants, bus stops, train stations, public parks etc.
Unpopular Opinion
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
- If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
- If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
6. Defend your opinion
This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
