That's nothing. They used to put the stuff in cigarette filters.

Russian roulette, but all the cylinders are loaded.

Russian roulette with a semi-automatic.

[-] X@piefed.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

(sniffs) “Well, mag holds 15 and I loaded just a single cartridge… 1 in 15 chance! Not bad.”

(racks slide, takes pistol off safe)

“Watch this shit!”

[-] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 weeks ago

That just means it chambers new rounds automatically. You still have to pull the trigger for every shot.

[-] SalamenceFury@piefed.social 0 points 3 weeks ago

Didn't a guy win a Darwin Award for that?

[-] X@piefed.world 0 points 3 weeks ago

With 8 billion+ meat popsicles wandering this planet, I’d be shocked if only one has done it.

Asbestos is an awesome material, until you break it apart and the dust enters your lungs. Before that, asbestos is actually safe to use. So depending on how the pipe looks like, you could still use it.

[-] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

Asbestos is pretty soft, I'd be worried about damaging it when cleaning. Though that's the stoner in me who uses metal tools to clean her pipes, I'm sure there are softer tools, perhaps... Pipe cleaners?

[-] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 weeks ago

I was thinking that pipe had asbestos inside, with some more normal material on top.

[-] DylanMc6@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

I prefer fiberglass insulation

did someone say asbestos?

this is the tailings from the Cassiar Asbestos mine.

This mine is abandoned, and those tailings contain asbestos. During operation, green dust (asbestos) would blow everywhere. Kids playing in the snow would caution others to 'eat around the green' so they don't get sick.

When you want to be sure tobacco is the healthiest thing you're smoking

[-] SalamenceFury@piefed.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

If you smoke from this you get the final boss of lung cancer.

[-] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

Am I the only one who has a STRONG desire to try this out

[-] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 4 points 3 weeks ago

Asbestos pipe isn't necessarily as dangerous as it sounds. I don't know how it reacts with fire (other than not burning), but asbestos in itself isn't dangerous - it's only when you breathe the dust that it becomes a problem.

The entire exterior sheathing of my house is asbestos. I'm literally sitting inside an asbestos box right now.

[-] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

The mechanics of smoking a pipe involve scraping accumulated ash from the bowl and scowering the stem. There is zero chance this thing isn't insanely dangerous to smoke.

[-] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

This.

It's a case of " A little knowledge is a dangerous thing " combined with " The difference between theory and practice, is that in theory there is no difference between theory and practice "

  • If you only know "asbestos is bad!" this is obvs dangerous
  • If you know "inhaling asbestos fibers is bad" this is maybe NBD
  • If you've ever smoked a pipe often enough to clean it, this is obvs dangerous

(and besides smoking is pre-industrial barbaric; vaping is an elegant weapon for a more civilized age)

[-] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 1 points 3 weeks ago

The difference between theory and practice, is that in theory there is no difference between theory and practice

It's why with robot training, they add small random variations in the simulation otherwise things don't work in practice.

Vaping is also horrible for your health, but with different poisons.

[-] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

Looks like you're basically right. It's much better than smoking, but not as good as fresh air. Quick summary:

Inflammatory Pathways: A 2024 study in the American Journal of Physiology found that regulated cannabis aerosol still induces transcriptomic and metabolomic changes in lung cells. It specifically affects lipid biosynthesis and oxidative stress responses, which are involved in lung repair and function.

Reduced Burden vs. Smoking: Recent human studies (e.g., UC Davis, 2025) indicate that the inflammatory markers in the breath of vapers are significantly lower than those of tobacco or marijuana smokers. Vaping appears to sit in a "middle ground"—cleaner than smoke, but more reactive than non-use.

Fine Particulates: Regulated vapes still produce PM2.5 (ultrafine particulate matter) that can penetrate deep into lung tissue, potentially triggering cardiovascular or respiratory irritation over time.

Asbestos pipe isn't necessarily as dangerous as it sounds. I don't know how it reacts with fire.

You should have just started with the later.

There's always a non zero chance you're going to breathe in some asbestos as the protective layer breaks down. And it will breakdown one way or the other.

[-] MunkyNutts@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago

It is the dust or small fibers that are inhaled that are problematic, they scar lung tissue and aren't easily expelled or at all by the body. Asbestos is a natural silicate mineral and was used as a fire retardant since it doesn't burn and withstands high temps.

[-] Madison420@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Not was, still is. Lots of industrial furnaces still use asbestos insulation it's just not a residential use.

[-] e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 weeks ago

I think this can be improved by adding Kents famous micronite filter.

spoilerThe "Micronite filter" in Kent cigarettes contained a mixture of crimped crêpe paper and compressed blue asbestos, the most carcinogenic type of asbestos.

[-] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

Cancer diagnosis any% hasn't been the same since

[-] NachBarcelona@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

OP, how dangerous do you think compared to a wooden pipe it is

a) according to your education and

b) after 3 minutes of research?

[-] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago

The tabacco will be your least problem!

[-] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

I heard it's not good for your health.

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?
