I dont think this is new. the catholic church has taken this sort of official position on these kind of matters for over a 100 years . Leo XIII argued in favor of workers rights and trade unions back in 1890 (in rerum novarum). In practice, of course, things go a little bit different.

This is a spiritual take that has its roots in ancient Greek philosophy. Some centuries before Christ the Stoics had planted a seed for equality: they proposed that all humans possessed a divine spark which linked us together to a greater universal whole. This commends respect and dignity for all without exception, individually and collectively.

The Christians adopted this as one of their founding principles as well. A couple of millennium later we can all see how this piece of wisdom still needs tending. Leo's really going for the basics of his doctrine here to question generative AI.

I'd go as far as saying that his argument is rooted in an idea that transcends religions and is a critical lesson for our species as a whole, one we have yet to truly fulfill.
